To clarify, that edict was delivered - then retracted - by the cabin services VP. No such prohibition was attempted by the pilot department.

...and hopefully fired anyone that was involved with the creation and approval of the memo. Seriously, who are these people?Rockie wrote:To clarify, that edict was delivered - then retracted - by the cabin services VP. No such prohibition was attempted by the pilot department.
Re: Air Canada bans poppies
In my opinion, the person or persons responsible for that Memo should be fired.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
I don't think she should be fired - it was a big screw up but no intentional disrespect. Lesson learned, I doubt we'll see anything like this again.
Re: Air Canada bans poppies
What do you mean ? She is a VP , she is very high up in management.
( not very many people above her )
She issued the memo. She needs to take the responsibility , or that the hit.
This is part of the problem with the Air Canada culture. No one will take responsibility.
The company management needs to issue an apology. Not some middle manager is public relations.
They need to say that IT WAS WRONG !!!! and issue an apology to ALL veterans and present service
members, as well to all Canadians.
In the past this Company has never had the "Balls" to do something that, they always run and hide from
any issue that is bad. They never take responsibility for a mistake.
My question is WHY would SHE do That ????? This needs an answer.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
Dress and deportment has been on management's radar for a while now. I don't know why - there isn't a problem as far as I can tell - however wearing non-issued uniform items seems to be a problem from management's perspective and they have been actively curtailing it. I'd guess in her zeal to stamp out this scourge once and for all the venerable poppy became an inappropriate victim.who me ? wrote:My question is WHY would SHE do That ????? This needs an answer.
In her defense I'm sure she realizes her mistake. Firing is a bit harsh.
Re: Air Canada bans poppies
People make mistakes. The person involved may have a history of poor performance and that would justify termination or they may be quite good at their job and is worth keeping on.
Like everyone on this forum, I guarantee you that our upset poster has made a significant mistake at work sometime in the past. I bet that person was not yelling for their own termination. More than likely it was mentioned as little as possible.
Next subject.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
Absolutely I have made mistakes in my career, I have paid for some of them.
I have apologized, when I have made mistakes, however I am not at the level,
nor have I been at the level she is. ( VP of in-flight services ) do you have any idea
how high up the management food chain that position is ?
This company ( Air Canada ) calls themselves the "Flag carrier" of Canada.
They should act like it. The disrespect and lack of appreciation to or Present and past members,
which this action did, in my opinion is truly significant.
Air Canada does not have the "Balls " to stand up and admit, they made a significant error,
and for someone in upper management, to stand up and address it.
History shows that this company runs and hides.
I PROUDLY say, I am a Canadian, and thank-you to all of our present and past members of our Military Services.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
Thank YOU. I am a former service member and it is plain that you appreciate and honour what the poppy and November 11th stand for. Please know that everyone at Air Canada from the very top to the very bottom feels the same as you do - including Ms. Smith-Valade.who me ? wrote:I PROUDLY say, I am a Canadian, and thank-you to all of our present and past members of our Military Services.
It was a mistake.
Re: Air Canada bans poppies
I heard, she said, it is now OK to wear poppies. But to wear them on the right side.
Really,... does she get it at all?

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
Not exactly. She said people could wear them on the right side if they felt the name tag reduced the prominence of the poppy. I'll just say she should retract the offensive first policy and then stop talking....who me ? wrote:I heard, she said, it is now OK to wear poppies. But to wear them on the right side.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
It may seem a small misstep to some....
But to even imagine that anyone in this country could for a moment even consider banning the poppy, from a uniform no less, the symbol that represents those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who served loyally, is frankly mind boggling and disturbing.
This idea should have never even occurred to the guilty parties in this decision.
My Great Grandfather was gassed at Ypres, was discharged, he re-enlisted and flew for the remainder of The Great War, he died about 15 years later from emphysema from being gassed.
My Grandfather fought in WWII, thankfully I've haven't had to take up arms to defend my country and way of life, but hope I would have the courage my ancestors showed when they were called upon, he's still going at 98.
Being fired may seem extreme but the guilty parties have shown an extreme disrespect and ignorance that is absolutely unacceptable.
Lest we forget!

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
Honestly I'd like to see her put out to pasture along with a few more executive/management types for reasons other than this.
But it isn't one manager, or any employee, no matter how high up they may or may not be, that defines us. Your level of indignation and the statements you make against Air Canada are incorrect.
Air Canada is the tens of thousands of Canadians in every corner of our country and around the world - including many veterans - who do their job well day in and day out, and carry the badge as the Flag Carrier of Canada with pride.
One boneheaded memo, or populist media trash story, or slanderous internet troll does not define us despite what you may believe or infer.

I can't forget that.

Re: Air Canada bans poppies
I served in the military, and I proudly wore a poppy on my uniform.
Re: Air Canada bans poppies
99% of the AC crews both flight and ground would ignore the ban anyways
Every member of my crew has had one on since the 1st..
