Fire trucks following West Jet 767 in YYC

Post by Jim Flint »

Hey. Saw the fire trucks following the West Jet 767 on 35R in YYC around 1730. Anybody know what the scoop is? Smoke in cabin? Hot brakes? Hydraulic failure? Dual citizens on board?

You gotta be kidding me?! Really?! How the prairie dogs do you lose a main wheel and where?! That's almost so unbelievable it's hilarious. Someone's peepee is gonna get smacked.

But seriously.... I think you actually meant they blew a tire.

Smart! If they start saving on wheels now, when the pilots unionize they will have some spare cash for pay raises!!!!

Lucky the offending wheel smoked a taxi sign and not someone else on the field...

Must have a hefty brake-mounting method on those aircraft - usually the brake shudders itself off with the wheel when they 'depart'.

I wouldn't think that this falls under the '£hit-happens' category though. Something AMEs and pilots supposed to take a good look at every day are the ruddy wheels/tire.

Good job to the guys...

I wonder how heavy they landed at? That's the HNL flight so the still had a good chunk of fuel...

Not sure I'd be too keen on taxiing in missing a wheel though... Did it come from Boeing that way? lol...

They dumped fuel SW of Calgary in addition to burning a bunch before landing.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if they had the fuel dump and many that do have it deactivated so I guessed they didn't/couldn't.

"You picked a fine time to leave me, LooseWheel".

(Well someone hadda say it. Do I gotta do everything around here?!?)

I couldn't read anywhere in the thread about the actual tire-losing part other than it hitting a taxi sign, so I assume they lost it on takeoff from YYC? (And we shit all over mainstream media for incomplete reporting!)

As far as taxing with a wheel missing, not a biggie considering the whole wheel truck design is to be redundant in the case of a blown tire. Sure, I'd make sure I knew what bits I still had and which I'd lost, and consider things like weight and taxi condition/slope, length of taxi, etc but otherwise bring it back to the gate.

What all needs to come off for the entire wheel to fall off anyways? I mean in terms of nut, cotter pins, safety wire, or whatever is used on 767 wheel.

Nothing....
The brake, retaining nut, lock nuts and bearings were all still attached to the aircraft.

What happened is the bearing seized for whatever reason. The wheel had been on there for a while too - it was not a recent change. Once the bearing seizes - it doesn't take long to grind through what little material the bearing race sits in, and the wheel simply pulls itself off.

This is not a reflection of WestJet or Boeing. It's not the first time and not the last time....s&*t happens.

Fire trucks followed in a 37 today. Apparently Elsa got a little heated. Smoke in the cabin and cockpit of 1401.

Before the thread drifts off onto an entirely unrelated incident, just curious where I can read about exactly at what point a geriatric 767 lost a wheel? Takeoff in YYC? Takeoff in HNL? Landing attempt in YYC?
