CBC Called Out by Air Canada Social Media

WOW – Drama with Air Canada and CBC!
by DCTA on September 15, 2017
If you follow the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canada’s public broadcaster, you’ve probably noted a significant number of articles that rag on Air Canada. In my opinion, often times these stories are warranted since Air Canada did “do bad.” However, it is notable how frequent these stories are (it feels almost weekly), and they are consistent in their condemnation of Air Canada.
Air Canada just posted this on their Facebook (seems like a rogue employee to me – I bet it will be deleted soon):
I gather that CBC The Sunday Edition producer, Talin Vartanian, wrote to Air Canada asking about Air Canada’s boarding procedures. Talin did not get a response after a number of follow-up emails. Eventually, Air Canada replied to Talin with detailed (and professional) responses. Then the bomb drops…
In what appears to be an accidental “reply all” email, Michael Enright, the host of The Sunday Edition, wrote:
We can skip all the bullshit. The bottom line is we say “Air Canada continues to employ the least efficient and most time consuming boarding system.”
This seems, on its face, to be a serious issue regarding journalistic integrity, and certainly demonstrates a bias against Air Canada at the CBC. While I’m surprised Air Canada posted this in a rather unprofessional way on their Facebook account, it is enlightening indeed.

This post has more layers than Inception.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Re: CBC Called Out by Air Canada Social Media
I was surprised that Air Canada didn't censor "bullshit". Had to double check and make sure that facebook page was the real one.
I don't care, profanity doesn't bother me. But still, I don't know if this was the most professional move on Air Canada's part and if it will accomplish anything.
Clearly, unprofessional on the CBC's part as well, just another reason we don't need a publicly funded (1.6b$/year) broadcasting company in 2017.

Might be the first time a forum post made me laugh so hard! But yes... I've always felt Air Canada takes the restrained, professional air when it came to negative news about its self. Kind of surprising and disappointed that they went this route.digits_ wrote:This post has more layers than Inception.

+1 on all. Whining about media bias never helps.Parkex wrote:I was surprised that Air Canada didn't censor "bullshit". Had to double check and make sure that facebook page was the real one.

Definitely a + 1 on killing off the communist broadcasting corp. What a waste of air.

Are there any Canadian institutions that meet with your approval? Not having a dig - just curious.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

Re: CBC Called Out by Air Canada Social Media
Quoted profanity has always been acceptable in the context of a news story. Some publications will redact it slightly for their more sensitive readers, but if people can't understand the difference between quoted expletives and those written by the author of a piece, well...can't help you.
And yes, it is definitely a story when a supposedly impartial journalist (does such a thing exist anymore? I feel like I could use my "whore bus" meme here again) lays out the biased editorial line that will be taken.
But I'm not sure I could call revealing CBC bias "news". They're only slightly right of Mao and Castro.
And I don't think it's unprofessional of Air Canada to expose a sleazy journo. Using social media to fight bias propagated by other media - including social - isn't whining, it's smart. Fighting fire with fire and all that.
It must get tiresome being constantly attacked by folks whose perceptions are still in the 1960's while the company has moved on considerably.

I’m still waiting for my white male privilege membership card. Must have gotten lost in the mail.

I think it's awesome they fired back this way. It's true Air Canada can never do anything right compared to the competition in the media.

What a surprise, being that they've been owned by Burger King since 2014.rookiepilot wrote:Still a Timmy's fan......photofly wrote:Are there any Canadian institutions that meet with your approval? Not having a dig - just curious.
Re: CBC Called Out by Air Canada Social Media
Interesting... Purchased by Burger King August 26, 2014. Then December 15, 2015, became a subsidiary of Restaurant Brands International (nominally of Oakville, Ontario) - which is majority owned by 3G Capital, of Brazil.altiplano wrote:Brazilian now I think...

They're still selling all those weird meat breakfast things they introduced, though.

Re: CBC Called Out by Air Canada Social Media
I too have fond memories of Mr. Dressup, The Beachcombers, and HNIC, but that nostalgic version of the CBC has been dead and buried for a long time.
You could say I like the IDEA of the CBC, I just wish it were fit to carry the BBC's shoes. I like the idea of a national broadcaster that could help inform and bring a country together, but that's impossible when it leans so far in one direction that it just falls over.
It's present-day iteration? Ugh. Just a propaganda arm now.
