The CTA has ordered Air Transat to compensate passengers for any out-of-pocket expenses related to the delay and pay an administrative fine of $295,000. The fine may be waived if the sum is divided amongst the passengers.

What happened was handled poorly there is no doubt about it but having been caught in the same situation as a passenger and as a driver I find it ironic that the airline gets the 100% pee pee whack. There are certainly more people to blame than just them. The whole system is flawed and in this day of computers they can tract alternates. The brains behind airports are very strict on number of movements and traffic saturation points. Applying that wisdom to the equation how could one not know the outcome of mass diversions to alternates. There is no major airport in the world that can handle that much extra traffic. Maybe there needs to be filters put on the number of aircraft holding the same alternate and deny the airport for flight planning as an alternate. The system is flawed so why didn't the authorities share some of the blame and be fined as well.
It's a sorry state of affairs for passengers who are mis-connected or stranded due to mechanical and now the canadian operators can just wash their hands of the issue. Cheap fares. They should supply a free tube of KY with every ticket because likely or not you will get it up the ass, ironically, it seems the majority of people think that's a small price to pay for a "cheap" deal.
