Electronic logbooks
Trying to decide whether to buy a new physical logbook or go electronic.
Does anyone have experience with the electronic ones available?
I don't really want to pay a lot so another option is to just build a spreadsheet myself.
Comments and ideas welcome, thanks!

Re: Electronic logbooks
There was a thread on this subject not too long ago, although I think that was more along the lines of which e-logbook to use.
Depends on where you are in your career and how sentimental you are to some extent. I have about 5 or 6 paper logs books, which may somewhat be attributed to my love of books, but as I finished off the last one I finally decided that it was just so much easier to keep a spreadsheet. I use a different sheet per year, and in each sheet divide it up by months. I also then use a master sheet where I can summarize my flying based on month and year just to see where the trends are and if I'm flying more or less in any given year. Not that it really matters, but I am nothing if not an exceptionally anal numbers gal
If you're at the stage where you need to have hours certified by a school or anything, you should probably stay with the paper logbook for at bit longer

Re: Electronic logbooks
As a private/recreational pilot, I'm actually looking forward to the milestone of filling my first paper logbook soon (just a few pages left)—I'm very aware that most people who get their PPL—and don't go on to fly professionally—give up long before that point, and I'm grateful for the life opportunities that have allowed me to keep flying for 15 years.
That said, once I've filled the first logbook, starting a second won't be so exciting, so I might go electronic then.

Not my first book and no need to get hours certified so just a matter of convenience.
I like books too but starting to think electronic of some kind is the way to go now.

Many solutions out there, some free, others subscription based, and others one time payment for life. It has been covered on multiple threads on here already.

Re: Electronic logbooks
Make a excel logbook and upload it to google sheets.
Free, stable, can backup local or export as a PDF, works great and can be customized to meet your mission.

Sorry for brining up a dead thread. But I wanted to share an Excel Sheet I have been working on that does most of what I need.
There are two versions that are the same, one just doubled the entries per page so it fills a standard sheet of paper! Works best on google docs I find and can sync using drive to multiple devices for free. If you have suggestions please share!

Re: Electronic logbooks
I've been using an Excel spreadsheet for quite a while now. It's set up to keep track of my currency and gives me a warning ahead of time. Just so I'm not scrambling last minute to get in some night circuits, etc...
I keep it on OneDrive and Dropbox so it's accessible virtually anywhere. In the extremely unlikely event one platform craps out, I still have it on the other.

Of course there are many solutions for this from subscription based to DIY, you just have to figure out what works for you. I made a video review about the logbook I use, maybe it will help: https://youtu.be/BRMDEGzj-4s
Re: Electronic logbooks
Used Logten Pro for years but I got sick of the fact that every few years you had to re-buy their newest version. MCPilot log is excellent.
I still keep a paper logbook though. If you want a nice logbook, not the low end stuff you usually find try www.leatherlogbook.com .

Re: Electronic logbooks
These look pretty, but they throw away the best feature of using a spreadsheet for logging... The ability to use Excel's built-in query functions to determine currency. Spread over multiple tabs like that, it's not possible to query your data and determine whether or not you're current. But if it were kept all in one large table, you could query the data and have a summary tab that summarized your currency with respect to time, type, flying conditions, etc.
