Fed $$$ for First Air

Post by Donald »

Can someone explain to me why my tax dollars are going to a private company, First Air, to build them a new cargo warehouse?

$12.7M in YFB and potentially $8M in YOW.

If the Feds did such a thing for WestJet or AC, there'd be an outcry.

First Air is owned by the inuit of Nunavik which is in Quebec and we all know the Liberals love Quebec.

Westjet never got any help, their success is completely due to their own efforts.

You need to educate yourself about air canada. Tons of stuff happened over numerous decades where government intervention saved the day. Long and complicated story where both sides were stuck in a mutual bad marriage, so they needed to help each other out. If we were in a US environment, air canada would have gone the way of pan am, and the other carriers (of which there weren't any in canada) would have easily taken up the slack.

Westjet could offer partnership with First Nation communities and be "Native owned" and get all the benefits that come with that.

How else will the pop and chips get to the communities on time...especially when pop is going for 5 bucks a can in a lot of the arctic villages...must be a very lucrative business for 7F....wonder why 5T doesn't raise a stink over the competition getting federal cash instead of them for this type of infrastructure ?

Dont think you are asking the right questions. Perhaps the question should be, why didnt 5T apply for the same grant program?

It was a public infratructure bid put out across canada, and the current government has a license to print money apparently, so why not put in a litle legwork into a proposal? My guess is 5T has lost its interest in the north some time ago and it focused on more lucrative work elsewhere. I am wrong?

Why should any airline, or business for that matter, get this type of grant when they are competing in a free market?

But especially one that bids on and competes for lucrative government contracts? (Food mail/nutrition north)

If the government is so concerned about food security, why not build a government cargo building that everyone uses? Or else buy out all the northern routes and service the northern communities themselves?

Because then everyone would be up in arms about nationalization, lack of competition, and how the government doesn't know how to run a business. Giving a private entity government money to support a government program that is considered uneconomical but essential to keeping people alive is a compromise between full-on socialism and heartless free-market capitalism.

Trust me 5T has had their share of bail outs and government forgivable loans. The most recent fiasco would be allowing 5T to separate from all the Debt owed by NTCL. They are all owned by the same company. NTCL fell and 5T walked away.

What about all the loans given to Bombardier, Ford, GMC and Chrysler over the years.

Do you have any idea how much profit was sucked out of 5T to prop up NTCL?

No i have no idea nor do i care. The fact is they were all owned by the same company. Canadian North was initially financed by funds backed by NTCL. Regardless the point is 5T has received more then their fare share of Federal funding in the past.
