CAT on upper analysis charts

Post by AirCanuck »

one of the rules of thumb for recognizing CAT is if the wind changes by more than 30 kts in 90NM. Fair enough, seems easy to apply. However, actually looking at the upper level analysis charts (example given always seems to be a 250mb chart) how do you actually measure 90NM? I don't see a scale anywhere.

Sorry for all the questions folks, thank you for your help. They will cease soon.

I know you didn't ask this specifically, but I just let the forecasters do the figuring and look for predicted areas of moderate to severe CAT. Of course, sometimes there is moderate turbulence where none is forecast and no turbulence where moderate is forecast along with the reality that areas of forecast severe turbulence that I have flown through have never met the definition of severe but.....if they can't forecast it particularly accurately, I doubt you or I will either.
