I don't recall ever getting more than *one* printed AIM in the mail after they stopped sending out the AIP. After that we were encouraged to find the digital copy online.
Now you just bend over and pay $55 to click on a link
... on an increasingly outdated and poorly organized website.

Maybe a better question is where the fuel surcharge that we all pay on every litre of gas goes? Used to pay for air navigation services... But since privatization, all that money now goes into "general revenue"... NavCanada doesn't get any of it.

Well, there are something like 20,000 pilots in Canada, if they all renewed every year that would be ~$1M in revenue just from the $55 fees...

I am not sure it’s a better question, but it is at least as good a question. 66 dollar navcanada fee if you have a plane in the registry. Even if it doesn’t fly. Kind of feels like a property tax levied by a private corporation....

Every 6 months? Can you even get a new medical sticker out of TC before it expires?

You don't get medical stickers. Just a came stamp with an unreadable date handwritten under it.

You are paying them to send you a bill, then take your money, then send you a receipt.

You are not getting anything for this $55.

mmm..bacon wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 10:11 am What problem? A government department, tasked with regulating the safe operation of the aviation system in Canada, extracts some of its operating costs from its user group so as to not download that onto the general tax base? Compared to all of the other costs of aviation, $55 is a bargain...
+1
I was trying to say this in my post from a while back, but rambled on so much that I missed the mark - you said it much more succinctly, Bacon!

Also, I can confirm that the data sent in by the CAME is reviewed by someone in Ottawa, because on one medical I had a slightly higher BP reading (mostly in response to a doc wigging out at me, but that's another story) and also a weight gain and promptly got the infamous "fat letter". Big brother is indeed watching!

I was not throwing out a guess. They sent out a letter explaining the reason for billing just before it started. Just because that reason no longer exists does not make my statement into a guess.

This $55 fee isn't new.

If you don't like it, quit flying

You'll get a medical sticker for your document booklet, if something changes in regard to your medical - say a requirement for glasses, etc...

Or, if you get a new ADB but TC hasn't put in your most recent medical - you can request a sticker to show the latest medical.

Oh, it's quite the joy....
Right after we got a new RAMO a number of years ago my CAME asked me one time "Have you gotten a fat letter yet? Cause don't worry if you do..." Apparently the new RAMO started to point out to people when their cockpit tummy was getting larger. At that time I never got one, but a few years later I had a higher blood pressure reading because I went to a new doc, who yelled and lectured me about how he wasn't just signing off everyone like the old guy, then took my blood pressure immediately afterwards. So in conjunction with that, they also noted that I had an elevated BMI (or something like that). I thought it was weird that they express it as a BMI, because I thought you needed to take into consideration someone's build - having said that, yeah, I put on weight - THANKS SO MUCH FOR REMINDING ME!!! Anyway, losing weight is on my To Do list, but while some may drink or smoke when they're stressed, I eat. A bad habit and one that I'm trying to get away from, but then you get your fun days like Halloween, and the day after Halloween when the candy is on sale, and... you know....

What a thoughtless, useless, non-constructive comment.

Quit flying over a $55 fee... ooook pal. I don't even know what you're trying to get at here. I don't like it. It seems many of us don't. Yet I highly doubt any of us will quit flying over it.

You "like" or "enjoy" this fee? Want to cover mine next year?

No more stickers is right. Haven't got one in 2 medicals. The fee is probably grandfathered. Fat Bonus for all them fat cats at TC eating donuts and having sugar crashes while fatigued pilots line up on 28R-R in SFO....

The cause of the SFO fiasco was due to both pilots being so fatigued neither of them could do a night visual landing at an airport that thousands of pilots do on a regular basis?
