Is this a good job?

Post by C.W.E. »

Walmart, the world’s largest big-box retailer, is giving truck drivers pay raises that would push their salaries up to nearly $90,000 and hiring additional drivers to address the shortage of truck drivers in its fleet.

Without knowing all the specifics yes. Benefits start day 1, 90k is roughly 30-40k more than most starting trucking Jobs. It's all "pin to pin" just hook and drop trailers no offloading. New trucks.

My brother used to hustle drywall between Calgary and Edmonton way in the last century. No helpers. No per diems. Pay was mileage from city to city. Nothing for in the city. Nothing for time spent waiting.

An average long haul “company driver” (not owning your own truck) is hard pressed to make over 80k running log
books to the ragged edge or even past it. It’s a wage that hasn’t changed in several years. Many drivers are in the 50-60k range if you like days off at home and drive legally.

11 hrs driving per day within 14 hrs of start in US 10 hrs consecutive rest to reset. 70 hrs in an 8 day cycle which either roll over or reset with 34 hours off duty. In Canada it is 13 hrs of driving within 16 hrs of start and 14 hours total on duty time 8 consecutive hours to reset. 70 hrs in 7 day cycle to roll over or reset with 36 consecutive hours off. Full time drivers drive 24+ days a month and 12,000+ miles. Though Walmarts math seems to be based on 100,000 miles per year so not even the 10,000 a month a lot of companies ask for. They also claim you'll be home weekly so probably more like 18-20 days a month not 24.

American. Walmart uses third party carriers up here for the most part. Driver shortage has bumped wages in US and signing bonuses etc faster than Canada. Though I've seen up to 8k signing bonuses here
