inflation are you keeping up?

Post by oldncold » Fri Mar 08, 2019 6:34 pm

:smt014 according to the bank of canada. Since 1996 inflation has risen by 48.5percent
A 50,000 salary in 1996 to have the same buying power in 2019 = 74580

A 30k salary in 1996. Would need 44k today.
40k capt salary in 1981. Would need
114k today.

Are you keeping up.

Nobody is keeping up, not just pilots, but the average Canadian worker is falling behind.

Lets pick on the regionals again, for Captain and FO annual salaries? What was the Dash 8 pay in 1996 for Air Nova, Air BC, et al? What did Air Canada pay their CRJ pilots in the 90s?

If flying for a regional will not pay enough to keep up with inflation why would anyone want to take such a job?

Here we go again. Stop trying to start sh*t. As the previous user pointed out, pilot isn’t the only profession not keeping up with inflation.

Boy with that logic, might as well be asking "why would anyone take any job in Canada at all?"

Ignore the old troll. Do your prayers every morning to oh holy chuck, sky God from the internet and that should keep him happy.

Does anybody remember the Dash 8 pay in 1996 for Air Nova, Air BC, et al?

How about Air Canada pay their CRJ pilots in the 90s?

Well for a long time, I have been getting the "official" annual cost of living index as per our government +1% pay raise every year... Does that help?

My insurance company just tried to raise rates by 15% to 'cover cost increases' same as last year. I called them out on it and got only a 5% increase. Far above the supposed 1%

Along with electricity, property taxes, snow removal and everything else. my salary certainly isn't increasing 10% per year.

My airline gives a 1.5% annual increase, so in essence we get a .5% pay cut every year. Ridiculous.

Yeah. That is based on CPI, or possibly CPIX. These don't include full costs of housing (land and mortgage cost), energy, fuel and transportation, taxes, fruit, vegetables, among others. The basic basket of goods CPI is based on, was also adjusted, for example Filet Minion was replaced with Hamburger...The CPI also includes household electronics, computers, TVs and similar, about the only goods becoming cheaper over time. Unfortunately most of us cant afford to upgrade them annually...

The Stats Canada's Survey of Household Spending (SHS) is better indicator of real life family expenses and is almost double of CPI at 3.4% annually since 1997 (when Statscan started monitoring SHS).

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report- ... e15551986/

3.4% compounded annually since 1996 comes up to 224%, so if you were making $50k , you should be paid $111k for the same job today, just to maintain your lifestyle.

I was making $84k flying B200 in 1995. My next job in 1996 paid similar amount flying 19 seater. 84k adjusted at 3.4% over 25 years (1995-2019 inclusive) would've been $193.7k in today's dollars. I am not making that flying 100+ pax in 705 jet today, 14000hrs and 25 years of experience later...

And this is why an economic model based on exponential growth only favours the rich in the end.

As many have indicated, few are keeping up no matter what your walk of life is, so yeah, rank and file Canadians are getting poorer year over year.

Typed in some figures into the bank of Canada inflation calculator.

Year one dash 8 direct entry captain for a jazz precursor, 35K in 1988= 70K in 2019.
After 4 years, with training and checking duties included, 68K in 1992=110K in 2019.

It got worse over time and the planes got bigger later on, in other outfits.

BUT.........Just met up with an old mate who took a long leave from big red when they were giving out leaves. He's back now in the Rouge thing. Apparently..........one Rouge guy, not him, played the system and made 400K. Call out deals and all that sort of stuff.
So I dunno, most are behind, but some are making a killing......
