Cool Airports on the way to NYC, Myrtle Beach, DC

Post by nwopilot »

Hello,

Planning a cross country trip through the US in a few months from Sudbury.

Here is a rough route.

Sudbury - Waterloo - Niagra Falls - NYC(HPN) - Myrtle Beach(HYW) - Raleigh(W17) Washington(2w5) - Windsor - Home

I realize that I will need to make a few fuel stops. I realize that I need special training for Washington airspace entry. I realize there are special procedures for NYC.

My question is: are there any cool airports along those routes? (Or within 100nm of those tracks?)

Cool place for a picnic? Nice view? Good restaurant on the taxiway? Airport on the side of a hill?

Thanks!

Cool airports are a lot cooler in the summer, FWIW.

Get some good current charts for the DC area and review the TFR’s.
Avoid it if you can all together.

If you're wanting to head a bit in land, Yeager (KCRW) works great for customs. On the south side of the Smokey Mountains, there's Hickory (KHKY). There's a BBQ restaurant and museum on site. FBO is built on a bit of a hill above the runway.
