Re: Jazz to launch pay for type rating program

I started flying commercially 3yrs ago, so I've met and worked with, and kept in touch with, alot of new pilots. I don't know a single person that's gone to the regionals with 250hrs. Of course, everyone has a friend of a friend that knows someone that went to Jazz straight out of college. But, unless someone close to the recruiting process can say otherwise, I think 250hr 705 pilots are pretty rare in the grand scheme of things. I personally know of 3 guys, between 1000 and 2000hrs, with good PIC and 2 crew 703 experience, that have been turned down by Jazz recently.

As someone who was a Captain at Jazz, I can tell you they exist. I'd say around %30 of the FOs I flew with came through a college direct entry program. It's increased drastically in the last few years as well.

Yup. Nowadays over 50% of Jazz FO’s don’t have their ATPL. Initial groundschools have more pilots without their ATPL then with. Trainer/Indoc guys are TIRED of the inexperience. Captains are tired of the babysitting. Sign of the times. It will get better though as they learn. Competence comes with experience and they learn well and quick. Our world changes constantly, get with the program, adapt, and shut the @#$! up about ‘how it’s always been’

I never really found to be babysitting unless they were like super fresh off LI. Most of my more memorable pairings were with younger pilots who were all pretty inexperienced and new. They were always keen to learn and do the best they could. Can't say the same for some of the Sr FOs who thought they knew it all and didn't understand that just because you "can hold a Captain position higher than me" still doesn't make you a Captain.

Look at literally everyone pilot youtuber. All of them had a lucky moment. Not saying it's impossible without it but luck can be the difference between people succeeding or giving up

Captain Joe is actually cool. I also don't mind Trent Palmer.

It's the Swaynes and Steveos and Flight Chops people I can't stand.

Hello all, I have been following this thread for a few days now. I'm enlightened and a little disappointed. When I first seen the announcement from Jazz I was pretty excited. Not because I'm a kid of a rich parent, but a 38 year old guy who is rounding out 10 years of service (in the CAF on the ground) and hoping to finally pursue my dream of becoming a pilot. I gotta say I looked at this program as such an amazing opportunity for someone like me, someone who has paid some dues once or twice, maybe not in a cockpit, definitely on the ground and sometimes in the back of an aircraft, who would be bringing his own earned 100k. But after reading all the hatred about snot nosed kids and such you all have me second guessing it.

So.... honest opinion, attitudes aside, if I'm the guy your saddled with fresh out of the program is this the kind of welcome I could expect?

No, because you aren't the rich kid we're all scared of.

I have to ask though, why do you want to invest this much money into a crap paying job? A regular commercial license and multi-IFR will cost less and still get you a higher paying job if you're willing to leave a major city.

No you'd be welcomed with open arms. Jazz pilots are all generally very accepting. There's a few sour grapes here and there as in any industry. I'd say you're the exact type of person they would like to see in this program.

It's not a done deal, I just seen the announcement and was a little excited. Honestly the other side of the coin is looking better to me more and more, the up North part that is, while reading this thread in between the trolling lol. I'm not currently in a major city, live on the army base still actually. I'm no stranger to the cold or hard work and I have always enjoyed sleeping outside or doing a patrol over being in the office. Plus my two favorite planes are the Twin Otter and the Dash 8 to be honest.

I showed some pictures to the wife last night of the landscape in Yellow Knife and Norman Wells and she was ready to move tomorrow.
