Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
A new years party guest this evening had a grandfather who was a long ago, far north bush pilot. It was found after his passing, that he had two cookie cutters in his emergency survival kit. I was asked why I thought they would be in the kit, and I can't think of a reason, can anyone else? I'm told it was a very well thought out kit, which he carried in whatever he flew, so one would presume that everything in the kit had purpose, what would one use cookie cutters for during survival?

Round? Heart? Or Pooh Bear?
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
I asked, they did not recall, other than to say it was not the shape of a tree....
Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
Could it be used to make a trap of some sort? If there were 2 they could slide over 2 sticks and with some rope be used as a fishing net or snare.
I assume they were metal?
The shape would probably be vital information.
What else was in the kit? Whatever survival function was missing, is probably what the cookie cutters were used for.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

“And what are the cookie cutters for, grandpa?”
“They’re to confuse the hell out of the people who find this kit after I die. Don’t tell anyone... it’ll be our little secret.”

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
I'm with him. I'm not as feisty anymore but.... My survival kit was put together to help me set up Gilligan's Isle. I used to tell all my CASARA buddies, "If we go down, I'm not waiting for you guys to find me. I'm building a town."
If I was into cookies I'd need some cutters to make my favorite shapes. Probably the dog bone in my case. Maybe I should add a pizza cutter in mine.
These days I suppose I'm more apt to carry some BBQ rub and a sat phone with some take out numbers pre-programmed in it.

He clearly wasn't an optimist if thought he'd be there long enough to plow the land, grow enough wheat to make flour and make cookies
Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
The more experienced in survival techniques you are the less equipment you need in your survival kit. Bear Grylls's kit has just a small knife and six inches of paracord. Mine has toilet paper, toothpaste, a stove with fuel, flares, and a jacuzzi.

Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
Photo: That seems like a bit excessive. Do you really need the toothpaste?

Ha. I dimly remember a tv doco on army training, and a point was made to the squaddies that oral hygiene was really important in a survival situation, and the thing they should hang on to more than anything else was a toothbrush. I have no idea if that’s actually true - can anyone with a military background comment?

I do. And I do not recall anything like toothpaste. It was a long long time ago.
I also dont recall the Jacuzzi.. Again...a long time ago.
My attempt at humour might have been a bit to subtle

The Jacuzzi was my idea. I like to use my initiative. How about the toothbrush though - did anyone mention that? Just curious.

Toothbrush. Only thing I needed when hitchhiking.

Seems pretty cup half full to me. Those are the sort of folks that set up homesteads in the west.bobcaygeon wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 1:59 pm He clearly wasn't an optimist if thought he'd be there long enough to plow the land, grow enough wheat to make flour and make cookies
Everyone knows about the deck of cards, right? Start a game of solitaire, when someone starts hovering behind you telling you to play a card, ask them for a ride home..
Some said, "Start cutting down trees and greenpeace will show up."
If I can get on here with a sat phone I'll just post my co-ordinates and offer a job ferrying the plane back for 500.
Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
I would not have thought that you would have had to pay $500 to ferry their plane back for them.
I wonder if the “cookie cutters” were actually something else entirely that looked like cookie cutters in their memory.
Anybody remember the little stoves and tablets that used to come with every ration pak? I had people ask me if they were for holding a cigarette package.

Re: Cookie cutters in a survival kit?
Anything like the red hand warmer with the charcoal, mine actually has one of those. Let me look for a link if they still exist.
I had a bottle of scotch and some Mountain Dew here but I eventually had to drink it because you never showed up.
Edit 1 - Slightly different and useless for survival but Zippo make one that runs on fluid.
Edit 2- Score, you can get mine at home hardware. Again I admit it is not going to replace a proper shelter beside a fire but I put it in my kit since it's small and might help warm up my hands.

Edit 3 - I can't find one like you're talking about for cooking Trey. Do you still have one? I'd like to see it.
Edit 4 - I have a half bottle or more of Bowmore no. 1 and some mountain dew.
Edit 5 - Aha! Is it like the Esbit brand unit shown at 3minutes in this video?
Edit 6 - I might have to go to MEC and buy one!
