Porter Airlines opens for business

Post by talkinghead »

Attention News/Business/Travel Editors:

Porter Airlines opens for business
Now Oct. 3 kick-off for reservations - flights beginning Oct. 23

TORONTO, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - Porter Airlines will begin accepting reservations
tomorrow for its first scheduled flights between Toronto and Ottawa beginning
Oct. 23. Information on fares and schedules for the carrier's 10 round-trip
flights each weekday and two Saturday and Sunday round-trips will be available
through registered travel agents, on Porter's website http://www.flyporter.com and
through its call centre at 1-888-619-8622 or 416-619-8622. One-way fares start
at $120.
"After years of planning, we're thrilled to finally bring our vision to
life with the official launch of our reservation system," said Robert Deluce,
president and CEO of Porter Airlines. "Porter will offer consumers a unique
experience in every way, including a simple fare structure. Our variety of
ticket options gives passengers the choice they need to balance their travel
requirements, while Porter's commitment to customer service ensures that all
passengers are treated to the same exceptional experience."
Customers can choose from Freedom, Flexible and Firm fare types that
provide varying options including complimentary flight changes and
cancellations, advance seat selection and same-day standby. The website will
also allow for advance check-in.
Whether travelling to or from Toronto, passengers will benefit from the
convenient location of Porter's operating base at Toronto City Centre Airport
(TCCA), which will dramatically reduce their travel time - including ground
transportation, check-in, security, and aircraft taxi time - when compared to
flights through Pearson International Airport.
Passengers originating in Toronto will have the opportunity to check-in
at Porter's downtown facility (on Station St. across York St. from Union
Station), ride the complimentary shuttle bus to the TCCA's new ferry terminal,
and then take a short ferry ride across the channel to the airport.
At the airport, passengers can relax in Porter's well-appointed lounge,
enjoying amenities including wireless Internet access, business work stations
and complimentary food and beverages.
From there, it's only a few steps to board one of Porter's 70-seat,
Toronto-built Bombardier Q400 aircraft with leather seats and extra legroom.
The ticket price includes complimentary in-flight premium snacks and beverage
service, including beer and wine.
Arriving Toronto passengers have access to Porter's shuttle service,
which takes them to the airline's Station St. facility, only minutes from
downtown businesses, tourist attractions and residences.
"Porter will set the standard for service," added Deluce. "Passengers
will be pleased to learn that we don't charge extra for the basics. Porter is
all about 'flying refined', and we will bring an uncompromising commitment to
delivering on this brand promise."

Let me pre-empt anyone from accusing Air Canada of predatory pricing.

Porter has set their fares $9 higher than Air Canada's already established Tango fares. In other words, Air Canada has not reduced their fares to beat Porter. They were already cheaper.

I like the free beer and wine part. Have to drink fast to get your money's worth since the flight is so short.

So quick to defend them like they are guilty of it at times....

This from an ex-WestJet VP on another forum regarding Porter.

"$120 for o/w Toronto-Ottawa eh?

Shall I drive from Thornhill into Downtown, park, then get to the Island, fly to YOW, do a days business, return into downtown and fight the traffic home, or maybe just do what I've always done and drive over to Pearson, pay the same fare, or less, and collect my triple points for my Florida holiday?

What to do......what to do.......

When do the 2 for 1's start?

And........shall we commence the estimates as to when:

a) the first use of the word "overwhelming" in a Porter press release.

b) the first flights are consolidated

c) the first sched change for mid week, mid day flying

d) the YYZ-YOW sched is pared back to 5x daily.

e) the first mention of a complaint to the Competition Bureau

e) and my favorite, how long this folly will last with 70 seaters. That, of course, is dependent on how much cash they are prepared to lose."

wonder how many seats it takes to break even in those brand new shiny Q400's.

Especially when they aren't payed for yet....

And the booze is free....

Compare them them to, say, Quebecair Express who was flying clapped out Saab's they got for next to nothing. Couple months and they got blown out of the sky by the competition.

The operating costs must be insane compared to how much $ they can bring in. Seems like for all the hassle of such a short flight, alot of potential clients wold just drive.

Those planes a a big investment for a new airline. Like the flying public even knows how good they are anyway? To them is still a small propeller plane.

There's my 2 cents. I'm not specialist or anything so please someone prove me wrong. For Porter's sake anyway

All good points, all the same I wish them the best.

Opening an airline with one destination is a poor idea. You need some sort of route network to get people on your planes.

YTZ-YQM-YYT Return, I'm tellin yas!

I think they'll do ok. They're focus is on people coming and going from Toronto for business. I doubt they're plan was to have people drive form all over to the island to hop on a flight.

On another note, it seems like the majority of those polled like what Miller is doing. He's got a hell of a lead in the polls, oh well. Interstng how the waterfront issue is SO LOW on peoples radar yet he spends so much time on it.

Miller way out in front in mayor's race: CTV poll
CTV.ca News Staff

David Miller is way ahead in the race for mayor with 65 per cent support from decided Toronto voters, while main contender Jane Pitfield has only 32 per cent, according to an exclusive poll for CTV Toronto.

The Strategic Counsel survey found the most important issues for residents is crime and gun violence, while infrastructure/public transportation/traffic comes in a close second.

The poll finds the electorate is almost as equally satisfied with Mayor Miller's progress as it was 10 months ago. Sixty-six per cent are content with his work, down only three per cent from November 2005.

The telephone survey was conducted between Sept. 26 to 30, the final week candidates were able to enter the municipal election. It involves only the two front-runners: Miller, the incumbent, and Pitfield, a city councillor.

Stephen LeDrew, the third high-profile contender who filed his nomination papers just before the deadline, is not included.

The results suggest voters don't dislike Miller's progress so far, according to The Strategic Counsel's Tim Woolstencroft.

"Miller's got a real big advantage over Pitfield, and certainly Pitfield's cause can't be helped by the entrance of Stephen LeDrew, who's probably going to siphon kind of more right-of-centre voters away from Pitfield," Woolstencroft told CTV.ca.

Of the 500 people polled, 46 per cent said Toronto is heading in the right direction, compared with 41 per cent who said it is not. Thirteen per cent did not answer.

When asked their overall impression of the candidates, 62 per cent said Miller was favourable, compared with 37 per cent for Pitfield. Twenty-eight per cent said Miller was unfavourable, while 22 per cent felt the same for Pitfield.

Below is a summary of the survey, which carries a +/- 4.4 percentage point margin of error:

Most important issue facing the city?

Crime/safety/violence/gun violence: 26 per cent
Infrastructure/public transportation/traffic congestion: 21 per cent
Taxes/economy/interest rates/unemployment: 10 per cent
Homelessness/poverty/housing: 8 per cent
Environment/pollution/water quality: 7 per cent
Garbage: 6 per cent
Waterfront: 1 per cent

Is Toronto heading in the right direction?

Right: 46 per cent
Wrong: 41 per cent
Don't know/not answered: 13 per cent

Overall impression of candidates

David Miller

Total favourable: 62 per cent
Total unfavourable: 28 per cent
Don't know/not answered: 10 per cent

Jane Pitfield

Total favourable: 37 per cent
Total unfavourable: 22 per cent
Don't know/not answered: 41 per cent

How would you vote if the municipal election were today? (decided voters)

David Miller: 65 per cent

Total satisfied: 69 per cent

Remember waaaay back, when Twotters were brand new, some outfit wanted to start running from TO to YOW to YUL with a fleet of 'em, and there was a huge outcry because the public was fussed by the expected noise, and it turned out they'd already been flying test flights back and forth for about 6 months and nobody had noticed? Was that from Toronto Island to the Expo site? Cartierville?

I got it:

YOW to YUL Stolports, built especially:

"The STOLport i n Montreal was built on the site
of a former garbage dump, which had been previously
levelled for use as a parking lot. The terminal
was located at one end of the runway because of
space limitation. The runway was, therefore, used
for taxiing as well as take-off and landing...

Airtransit Canada, a wholly-owned subsidiary
of Air Canada, was formed for the sole purpose of
operating the STOL demonstration service in accord
with the project's objectives. All necessary funds
for the organization and operation of Airtransit,
net of any revenue by Airtransit, were provided by
Transport Canada under a contractual agreement."

It was City Express from TI to YUL using Dash 7s, 350,000 pax per year. Wonder why they went T.U?

Three different fares available. The cancelation fees are not cheap if not on the freedom fare.

Porter Airlines
Fare Structure

Freedom Fare

* Fully refundable
* Complimentary changes or cancellations
* Complimentary advanced seat selection
* Same-day standby is permitted at the airport

Flexible Fare

* Changes or cancellations for a $50 (Cad) per itinerary change
* Complimentary advanced seat selection
* Same-day standby is not permitted

Firm Fare

* Changes or cancellations for a $100 (Cad) per itinerary change
* $15 (Cad) advanced seat selection fee
* Same-day standby is not permitted

If the ticket prices are based on the number of seats sold already then it looks like the sales might be doing ok. The following is for Nov 13 and 14.

Why do you think they would do that?

For the same reason C6 did . the owners got tired of losing their money.
And yes be sure to book any airline flight on a c card for that reason.
