L-39
This may be the wrong place to ask, but ...
Does anybody here own or fly an L-39? I'm getting bugged to fly one, which I guess means I need to go somewhere and get a type rating and to add it to my ICAS card ... does anybody know anything about them?

Here you go bud. Don't worry they have a good ejection seat.

Ask this guy Michael Smith, he could use the money.

I guess I'm going to Sante Fe to see Larry. Looks like he's got his ICAS card so I'm sure he knows a qualified ACE.
I was hoping someone here had flown one, don't wanna bug Andre Lortie, he's always incredibly busy.
It's a trainer, after all, so I figure it can't be a fire-breathing dragon. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Should be fun putting together a solo airshow routine.
Thx guys.

If you go here http://www.tc.gc.ca/aviation/activepage ... .asp#quick
and type in L39 in the model number form, two results from Alberta come up.

Weren't those the two that the media made a story out of saying they were smuggled in to the country by a private collector when the fact of the matter was the taxes simply hadn't been paid on them?Dex wrote:If you go here http://www.tc.gc.ca/aviation/activepage ... .asp#quick

The fellow in YKF that owns one is Steve Milligan, almost positive that he doesn't have an ICAS card. Bill Carter over in Guelph may still be an ACE, not really sure, haven't seen him in a few years.
It's better to break ground and head into the wind than to break wind and head into the ground.
Heh - I know Bill. Unfortunately, he's not qualified as an ICAS ACE to evaluate "jet warbird aerobatics", as ICAS puts it.
P.S. I'm astonished that anyone would C-reg an L39. Apart from the incredible Transport hassle - you would be grounded for at least a year, generating mountains of paper as if cost is no object - it would kill the resale value of the aircraft in the USA, which I suspect must be 99% of your resale market.

H,
I was qualified on the 39 back in the days the NL had them. Easy bird to fly. Does nice loops and rolls. A little heavy on the controls if you ask me.
I would recommend Dan McCue from Maine. He is after all the man responsible for bringing these lovely machines to the west. He has access to a 39 (he sold his) and could train you on it. First thing you will need is a type rating (TC and/or FAA) then an ACE. Dan was an ACE in a previous live and could recommend a good Jet guy.
They can be registered in CA simply because Andre built the mountain of paper work and opened the door for everyone else. You thought the 39 was hard? Try the Hunter...
Email me if you want details,
F

Linecrew,
Nothing could be further from the truth. The NL were associated with the individual involved on this accident a while back. When their association terminated (I could only speculate as to why) they bought / rented 4 L39 that were flown on the airshow circuit (for one season only) in 2001. Then in 2002 the obtained a contract from the Canadian Forces and moved to Hawker Hunters. To date, they have 9 Hunters on military contracts.
To the best of my knowledge, the only association bwtween the NL and the crash L39 was the paint job.

Do they still have the Hunters? I thought the contract was recently awarded to these guys.
