No problems here, but I gotta say I miss the Garmin.

I frickin hate the Garmin, except for the lovely blue map, and showing the hold pattern/procedure turn it doesn't really have half the functionality of the kln90

I have...but do we work for the same company? Flying the same tail perhaps?
I really miss the Garmin 400/500's.

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
ya, been up in YYQ and north for a week and lost raim i dont know how many times, in a plane with no DME... luckily the wx was pretty good all week... wonder whats up,
Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
I had an airplane once where the sat phone was interfering with the gps causing raim to be lost. Once we turned the sat phone off and problem was solved.

I beg to differ, but then I also know how to work a sextant.
Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
Do a search on Ebay to see the differing values of the KLN-90 VS the GNS 430,
It would seem my opinion is the norm..
I dont see how your statment about knowing how to use a sextant relates..
FYI people "knew" how to use a sextant 200 years ago...

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
No problems with the aircraft I've been flying.
Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
Just because it's new and improved doesn't make it better. I find the data/E6B functions are faster, and more comprehensive on the King. I also don't fly in Map mode as I can do a more accurate job using the Nav1 Garmin or Nav 1/3 on the King. So for me the KLN90 beats the G400/430

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
I've had recurrent problems with raim on the 89 and 90b models this year, but it seemed to have improved over the last little while. Never had an issue with raim on the Garmin though.

Yes I can, not really sure why this is relevant in 2009, but I learned how about 3 years ago on a "cruise" on the Picton Castle....Strega can you use a sextant?

Why Strega you name dropper you.
I don't I could commit that much time to such an endeavour.
Perhaps you could post a new topic on this "cruise".......I for one would be interested to hear about this.

Is that the one that Bob Gainey's daughter got swept overboard?
Back to the original direction of this thread. Didn't mind the 89 or 90, but much preferred the 400/500 series garmins. BTW, anyone see that alphanumeric keypad that an independant aircraft manufacturer had made to interface with the garmins. I think it was Cirrus, but I can't remember exactly. Pretty sweet!

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
Of the 4 tails I flew last week with 90B's, all crapped out on at least one leg for a little while, and they all seem to take unusually long to find their position once turned on. On my last flight I was even joking that GPS hadn't crapped out, and minutes later the nav flag appeared.
Maybe these things are trying to tell us they're due to be replaced??

Might not be a unit problem ...maybe a gps sat problem

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
I've used the 89B, 90B, and 430/530 extensively, and I have to agree that the Garmins are by far the most user friendly. They can all do pretty much the same stuff, it's just a question of figuring out how sometimes. The Universal FMS we have in one of our planes, though, now that's an entirely different ball of wax. I haven't totally figured that one out yet.Strega wrote:Do a search on Ebay to see the differing values of the KLN-90 VS the GNS 430,

Re: RAIM and KLN 90B's lately
In the past few months we have had raim warnings that last for 5-10 sec at a time and maybe might happen once every week or so

Not RAIM, but a abnormal number of failures lately.
