Looks good Niss... dont forget the most important survival item - a good knife (or multi tool) and if you have room, a smal lightweight tarp makes a good shelter and depending on color a signaling device.

Might add to that a good quality knife, can't go wrong there. Oh, and maybe a big ol' bottle'o'rum.

Wouldn't a plastic container be lighter?

You're missing the obvious survival kit requirement. As I was told when I took ejection training in the airforce, every ejection seat pack contains a deck of cards. Why you ask? Simple, in a survival situation get out the cards and play solitaire; withing minutes somone will appear to tell you "red jack on black queen."

Heya Nis,

I'd recommend adding the following items:

- Duct tape (roll it in a 6" strip)
- Orange signalling tape
- Water purifier drops or tablets
- Couple of safety pins
- Wire
- Pocket knife (as per above)
- Fire starter (steel wool or dryer lint are excellent) (fuel from a/c works pretty good too if available!)
- Fishing line, hooks
- Wire saw (Coughlans, for sawing wood)

You've got a pretty big box there, so it should be no problem adding these few items.

What do you guys have for survival kits?
couple things you could add/change

a decent knife, or multitool.
switch emergency candles for citronella candles
deet
550 paracord instead of nylon..or just have both
tinder for your flint, although the fuel tabs might be fine. even magnesium sticks are impossibly hard to use in the cold.
condom (for water...)
fishing hooks
tape
more matches
copper wire

or just go as Cat does ..condoms/credit card/sat phone

Busted into my survival kit yesterday while waiting for 5 hours for passengers. I ate a granola bar that had to be 20 years old. Oh well it was better than the time I cracked'er open only to find out that the boss's wife had filled it with potatoes and a bag of sugar.

I always fly with my leatherman Charge Ti, but I am adding a swiss army knife just in case. I have some tinder I forgot to add, so that will be in there. I am going to also add a fishing kit.

I thought about the water tablets, but you will get more water out of the "Penis Pump" and it will be quicker/better tasting.

I forgot to mention the square things in the corner are road flares, they will lite very easily with the matches.

Thanks for the great ideas!

Condoms are a good idea.

Add some gum with sugar in it and if you can get it...Morphine.

I'd go for a foldable "Sierra saw" instead of the wire one. Much sturdier, and works well.

Did I miss something or is there not a single lighter in the kit?

I would also add spare batteries for the flashlight.

Goodbye,

Louis

My two cents

1. Bug net (for when you run out of the spray, or for the horse fly's)

2. For a saw all you need is a blade with two key rings and some twine and you can make a saw from a sapling that will last forever.

3. A spare set of clothing, and depending on season you could use a spare set of longjohns, socks, or just a thin pair of pants that can be changed to shorts.

4.The tarp is a great idea, but to add on it a space blanket(even the cheap kind) is small but will work great to keep the heat in a leento.

5. If you have to room in that large box put in a cheap hand held radio incase the one in the plane gets scrapped.

6. A good pair of leather working gloves. This will save your hands from getting cut, and while you r on your own that is the last thing you need.

7. Imodium just incase you get the runs or beaver feaver, its a never ending cycle and losing that much water will kill ya. Tylonol or advil is good two.

There is more but it is slipping my mind

I perhaps foolhardily fly on wheels or skis across plenty of bush. These are the contents of my emergency/travel kit. It will all fit into two normal sized duffle bags. In the winter I also wear a PFD approved insulated Mustang suit. I think the only thing I haven't included is beer for the Sartechs if I had to be rescued.

-lightweight aluminum frame hacksaw replaced with a bowsaw blade
(wrapped the blade in thin cardboard so it doesn't cut everything)
-Optimus 8R multifuel stove (works great on avgas) & 1 extra fill of fuel
-UNO candle lantern & 3 extra candles (almost 8 hours each)
-1.25L cookpot (camping style, collapseable handle)
-leatherman (worn on belt in back country)
-additional folding lockblade knife)
-Red dollar store picnic tablecloth (very compact)
-2 space blamkets
-tylenol
-strike anywhere matches dipped in was in an airtight container
-signal mirror
-emergency whistle
-small length of duct tape rolled flat
-compass
-compact cutlery set
-roll of aluminum foil with the paper roll removed and packed flat
-one roll of A$$ wipe!!!!
-50' of 1/4" poly rope
-collapseable 2L water container
-drinking water tablets
-extra bic lighter
-first aid kit
-leather gloves
-LED flashlight and 2 extra battery sets
-pepper spray
-small 3 season tent (like an Apex 2XTC
-dry thick soup mixes (like potatoe etc.)
-additional pasta
-oxo soup base cubes
-coffe pot & coffee (because I can't live w/o it)
-at least two packs of smokes
-and if enough room...JIFFY POP

in winter
-extra socks
-slip on foot warmers (common at hunting stores)
-bellaclava
-heavy gauntlets and wool glove liners
-toque
-extra set of long gitch
- -30c/-35c sleeping bag
-sleeping foam or self-inflating mattress
-frozen luncheon meat/weiners & frozen peas/perogys

in summer
-2 mosquito head nets
-rain suit
-inflateable lifevest (if flying over water)
-baseball cap
-change of clothes (long shirt & pants if flying in shorts)
-pullover fleece
-collapseable fishing rod & basic tackle (if flying near water)
-canned and disgusting cornedbeef 2 cans...no fear of eating it unless I have to!!
