Seaplane contract in Nicaragua

Was recently reading a Nicaraguan publication that mentioned a Canadian company is starting an air service using 4 Turbo Otters. The name of the contact mentioned was Mario Coppo.

Anybody know more about this?

I'm just north in Belize at the moment. I haven't heard of any talk of seaplanes in Nicaragua.

There are a few islands off the east coast and a large lake around the capital. I haven't flown there myself but seems to be limited geography to support 4 Otters.

I don't think that the geography is too limited for 4 Otters/Twin Otters. The question what the demand is and how much of a traffic flow will result from it (which I think will largely depend on fares). It is interesting though.

NICARAGUA. The government of Nicaragua in the coming days will receive the first of four seaplanes, which will start from this month to promote domestic tourism, said the president of the National Port Enterprise (EPN), Virgilio Silva.

According to company president, on Saturday from the Port of Managua Salvador Allende, the first seaplane from Canada.

Silva explained that the purpose of promoting domestic tourism, Nicaragua counted from the first quarter of 2011 with four ships to help cover new tourist routes in less time and more economically.

He said that the use of seaplanes in the country for tourism is an innovative and perhaps unique in Central America.

He stressed that the project will cover tourist routes from Managua, capital of the country, to the autonomous regions of North and South Caribbean

You're not missing much by not being able to read Spanish-- that article really doesn't contain much information.

It appears that somehow the Sandinista Government has a significant interest in the project.

I do hope they hire experienced seaplane pilots with Otter experience. A successful seaplane operation would have positive repercussions throughout Central American and perhaps spur other countries to start looking at seaplane operations more seriously.

However, if they try and drop their favorite nephew into those machines the negative publicity of a crash will be noted by other countries in the area. Any sitting on the fence of allowing or promoting seaplane operations will turn tail and run.

From the sounds of it, kevinsky18, it sounds to be a wet-lease (ACMI) type of arrangement for Turbo Otters and Twin Otters. Since there are only a few Canadian companies capable of such thing I was trying hard to think of who it might be. Since I can't put it together, I was hoping some other member might be in the know.

Sometimes I feel like doing my floatplane rating and heading down to the Caribbean or Greece or the Maldives! This Canadian winter gets to me! Nicaragua this time of year would be nice!
