Translation help

Post by Blakey »

I'm reading a French accident report and I'm stumped by a term. I'm sure it's common in French-speaking aviation circles but I've never heard it before. Can someone help me out with a translation?

What does "a fait un cheval de bois" mean in regard to an aircraft. "Made a wooden horse" doesn't mean anything in English unless the accident involves a flying sleigh piloted by a fat old guy dressed in red!

I think it's talking about a nose first landing or a nose dive. What's the context? It could also mean a ground loop.

The report reads, in part:

My French is a little shakey but I can make out everything except the "a fait un cheval de bois". A ground loop would certainly make sense but I can't find a translation for either "ground loop" or "cheval de bois".

Critical knowledge of the French language for pilots:

M'aidez
Panne
Décrochage (stall)
Cheval de bois (ground loop)
Bidule (thingy)
Truc (thingy)
Chose (thingy)
Chier dans tes bobettes (all engines failed in IMC with severe icing and a stuck gear)
