There aren't very many ways left to distinguish yourself in aviation. Salvage and recovery engineers are some of the only rock stars left in the flying world. This stuff is awesome to see. Great video.

Re: Antarctica recovery
Wow, I am seriously impressed by how much damage that plane had and how they were able to fix it out on the ice shelf. Those guys deserve props. The pilots who flew it out have balls of steel too.
Awesome video.
Awesome video.

What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Re: Antarctica recovery
I might be wrong but I've heard that no trash can be left in Antarctica.crazy_aviator wrote:Waste of $$$$$$$ but then who cares ! Specialists on vacation ( Global warming researchers ) at asnine costs to many countries ( taxpayers)
If a damaged aircraft can be saved one way or another they will do it (or have to do it?)
The most noticeable salvage was probably this C-130.

I cannot imagine just the digging!
Re: Antarctica recovery
What about Darryl Greenamyer's salvage of the Kee Bird B-29? Always heartbreaking watching that story... :tear:
Re: Antarctica recovery
That was in Greenland, not Antarctica though....

Very cool story and recovery. I watched the kee bird long ago and felt so bad for those guys after all that work.

What about recovery of the twin otter on the mountain? Is that going to happen? It should be done if it hasn't already.
If SAR techs got to it, you would think it could be slinged out by helicopter. ?

Don't be disgruntled....move on!
Re: Antarctica recovery
Huh? A 9000 or so pound load, half or more stuck in the snow and ice, broken, so as not to whole to pick up, at a high elevation, out of HOGE for any helicopter capable of carrying it, once you got the chopper there? No, they won't be slinging that Twin Otter out, unless it's in a lot of smaller pieces, in many expensive trips. If SAR techs got to it, you would think it could be slinged out by helicopter.
Borek's team are masters of Antarctic recovery, and deserve the accolades, for a job more challenging than it would appear... Not the first Basler to be rebuilt and flown out of there. The Baslers are used in a near one of a kind aircraft type role, supporting important research in many fields. No other plane could do what they do there....
