Do you need a Cat 2 Medical for every position?

Post by nwopilot »

Hey guys,

I have a few questions. I tried searching but couldn't find great answers.

1. Do you require a CAT 2 medical for FSS positions (AAS and FIC)?

2. Do you require a CAT 2 medical to be an IFR centre controller? I assume tower controllers need one?

3. What happens if you lose your medical a few years after you start work? Are you screwed like a pilot? Or does Nav Canada take care of you (I.E give you another job?)

Thanks!

Can't really help with your third question, but I'm pretty sure that all three streams require the medical.

Edit: spelling

Unless there is an office job available that you can apply on and win the competition, you are out of luck. Once all your sick benefits expired you would probably end up on disability.

All IFR and tower controllers require a Cat 2 (or 1) medical. My understanding is FSS and FIC specialists do not require a medical.

FSS (AAS and FIC) do require a medical. Every 3 yrs up to 40 and every 2 years after. Not as stringent as ATC (licensing and certification requirement differences). Referred to as SPECIFIED FSS MEDICAL EXAMINATION, also performed by a CAME.

Being an atc is mandatory to have ur medical exam, as an fss, while u were selected, nav canada requires u to go thru a medical examination as well, from what i know people lose their medical after a few years if work, nav canada will try their best to give you an alternative position and provide necessary training, i know one fss who lost his medical, and now he is a technician for nav can. Hope this help.

Would a class 1 medical be accepted for ATC? Just wondering based on comment from another poster above...

Not true. The validity period is determined by what you are using the medical for, not what category it is.

I can tell you it is true. I had the same scenario when I started. They told me it was only good for 1 year because a cat 1 reverts to a cat 3 after a year, not a 2.
