Hi folks,

I was hoping some of you from the ATC world could help me with a few things. I am writing a book (non-fiction) and the main character is a pilot. I've been in aviation for almost 30 years but have not experienced much from the ATC side of things.

When an aircraft declares and emergency and squacks 7700, as a centre controller what exactly happens. I know the 7700 sets off an alert to all controllers, but can someone tell me exactly what happens on your end, and as a controller what do you do.

Also are there any special procedures when handing off an emergency aircraft from one country to another. For example Piarco Control to San Juan Centre.
