Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here
Calgary Terminal is undergoing a major airspace change in the upcoming weeks as we prepare for Rwy 35R in June 2014.
The whole southern portion of the Edmonton FIR is changing to accomdate new arrival and departure routings into CYYC as well.
Pilots in the area will notice many changes starting Dec 12.
On Avcanada currently there are at least 3 YYC terminal controllers as well as some YYC tower controllers (not sure how many)
To help through the upcoming changes we figured it would be wise to start a forum on here to answer any questions from the aviation community.
Ask away and we will do our best to answer.

YYC Tower controller here. I think I'm the only one (may be other lurkers). Questions for the tower ask away too!
Re: Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here

I'll start,
Why is it now considered unsafe to land 26 when 35L and 29 are active?

"Safety..." (clearly has nothing to do with efficiency) "...is our no.1 priority".

In the Terminal there is enough OT to drown yourself. Depends how much you want to work i guess.. There is enough for everyone to Max out plus many, many shifts that go unfilled.
As for the Rwy 26 thing..
A few weeks ago we received an ops letter in the terminal stating that rwy 26 wasnt to be used if 35/29 or 17/11 were active. We had no previous idea of this until we read the letter that day. The tower manager had signed off on it but we had no involvement.
The driving force behind this was some high profile incidents that you may read in Cadors. Many runway incursions due to pilot error and taxing thru rwy 26 without holding short. An Air Canada A330 a while ago that taxied across 26 while being told to hold short thus causing the traffic on short final 26 to go around was the big one to get TC's attention.
TC is on a hunt to limit runway incursions....
Knee jerk reaction = the situation we have now.
All of us in the terminal arent happy with it as many in the tower im sure arent happy with it.
Rwy 35L/29 and 26 offloads can be very complex for both sides, but when the traffic permits but it also can be very helpful to all parties
Im also guessing the new CNK hanger now wanting RWY 29 had a part in this.
Im sure the Tower guys can shed some more light on this......

35R and 35L far enough apart for simultaneous ILS approaches?

How about the YYC Runway Availability booking website. http://rapt.yyc.com/
Did this ever help the flow for you guys? Are you still wanting pilots to register a 'slot' time?
When it first started, there we a number of bookings. Now it's wide open green (available).

RAPT is a Calgary Airport authority program. I am not sure what its future will be with the new runway opening in May/June.
It did (does), at times, help to spread demand out a bit but we still use TMU(W) to manage excess demand over capacity...today will be a prime example of that.

Just to add to this, the CAA has indicated that they will continue to run the program for a while after the parallel opens and then make a decision based on what happens with traffic demands.

If there are two a/c on the ILS's (say 35L and 35R simultaneously), do they have to be separated 1000' vertically/staggered on the approaches?Acey91 wrote:35R and 35L far enough apart for simultaneous ILS approaches?

Re: Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here
Aircraft must to be separated by 1000' until "established", then depending on the mode, a minimum 2 mile stagger will be run, or if an ILS monitor is in place the stagger is not required.

Re: Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here
Is the ban on small aircraft going to be continued when the new runway opens up ?
Re: Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here
That is an Airport Authority issue. I haven't heard anything either way.

1000' or 3nm until established on the LOC and both aircraft need to have intercepted at 2nm or more away from their respective glideslopes. After that you can descend to 2nm staggered or if there is a loc monitor it is another story.

Also, 1000' or 3nm until one of the aircraft is cleared for a visual. At that point, no staggered separation is required. They can be side by side, no LOC monitor required !
Speaking of LOC monitor, are you getting additional staffing for that position or not really?
I know here in YUL, the terminal guys have never had a LOC monitor position. Just wondering if it will be the same in YYC, since both airports have similar movement counts !

Re: Questions for CYYC Terminal? Ask here
Yes our staffing #'s are going up, the ILS monitor position is built and we are being trained on how to do it.
