A bunch of years ago at the Bagotville airshow, they had a drag race between an F18 and Patrick Carpentier's champ car. The set up was quite different, it was only on 1/2sm. The champ car won hands down for 2 reasons;
1st, it accelerates faster then an F18, for the first 1/2sm that is; and
2nd, the F18 pilot didn't like the idea of accelerating his jet down the runway with a car hidden under his wing... so he delayed the break release for a fraction of a second letting the car go first.
Still fun to watch.
