Re: 5% per year
Francesco Fornabaio, flew an Extra 300 up to a year ago then switched to his new plane. That day in Venice had low ceilings and viz, maybe a factor. Some discussion in Italian forums about issues with the vertical stabilizer, but all the ground shots look ok. GoPro on board, so we may get more, like with Fred Canabas.
Then there's the guy buzzing his pals with a T-28 and his mom on board that stoved in on a barrel roll. We got 5 for the year yet?
Jerz, any comments on these?
BTW, lots of grief with low level spins, Jerz stopped doing them, so have I.
On the good news side Jurgis Kairys bailed out of his Su-26 over the Agean Sea halfway between Kavala and Athens. Engine quit an hour into his flight at 3000'. He tied himself to some wreckage and prepared to swim all night to an island, but a SAR helicopter found him about 3 hours later. Jerz, any insights? Did he really bail out or just jettison the canopy?

That is awesome to read, the rescued part. I wonder what things he had to help out in being found. Mirror, personal locator transmitter, flares, strobe light, sat phone? Maybe nothing but the wreckage and some good spotters. Nice to see anyway.karmutzen wrote: On the good news side Jurgis Kairys bailed out of his Su-26 over the Agean Sea halfway between Kavala and Athens. Engine quit an hour into his flight at 3000'. It's a tragic number that is never ending reminder
of the realities of life especially to those who wish to stay alive.
Hopefully someone will fill us in on how and why this accident occurred.
This is a video taken from one of his goPro the day before the accident, on saturday, same place, same program...

Italy mourns the death of Francesco Fornabaio
Written by Snap&Roll
The aerobatic and air show pilot Francesco Fornabio died during an air show on Sunday 21st after his plane crashed into the ground. He was performing a spin with his XA-41 for the “Fly Venice” air show hold at Nicely airport (Italy).
According to the preliminary reports and witnesses, the accident occurred when the plane continued to descend uncontrollably up to the point where it crashed into the beach area of Sant Nicolo.
“L’Agenzia nazionale per la sicurezza del volo”, the national safety agency, will carry out an investigation to determine the possible causes of the accident together with the Police and the firefighters.
Fornabio aged 57 was born in Sitgliano (Matera) and raised in Milan. He used to train in the province of Udine, in Campoformido. He was considered one of the most experienced aerobatic pilots in Italy and a symbol of the Italian school. His Friends, fans, and supporters posted on his Facebook wall a lot of sorrow and disbelief messages, expressing condolences. Fornabio was very specialized in the freestyle modality and he won the Italian championship this year in the unlimited category. He was a member of the Italian national aerobatics since 2002.
Thanks to his amazing skills and affection received from the public, Fornabaio was elected in 2010 to represent the prestigious aviation watch-maker Breitling in numerous international air shows and events.

Another one in Italy. Formation flight midair. One made it one didn't. Interesting footage of flipping a plane landing on water and then wondering how you're going to get out.

Re: 5% per year
Footage of the water landing from the side shows the canopy fully slid back before touchdown, and footage of it going over shows the canopy fully closed... There is no lock when the canopy is open, so it's likely that it slammed shut as soon as it touched the water.karmutzen wrote:Another one in Italy. Formation flight midair. One made it one didn't. In any case, the spectators lifted the airplane, the canopy opened, and that pilot walked away. The other aircraft lost a wing, and the pilot did not survive.
Re: 5% per year
And O'Berg in his S2B today makes 3 this year. 2 more to go.
https://youtu.be/Ki-F0EWVtJ8
No coincidence it is a similar manoeuver to 3 of the last four airshow fatalities.

Re: 5% per year
Sad.. But tumbles and spins dont always go exctly the same way. Not meaning any disrespect to pilot but I always try to understand what went wrong for obvious resons of self preservation. Some thoughts based in a few looks at the video.
This looks like an attemt to tumble but at too high an airspeed and too shallow an upward vector. Result is an inverted snap/spin from more or less horizontal flight rather than a tumble on an upward trajectory. That followed by an understandably rushed inverted spin recovery which instead crossed over to an upright spin which was then recovered normally but power was not reapplied in the subsequent pullout thus eating still more altitude.
Essentially three things in a row that lead to the crash, any of them being done by the book could have possibly prevented it however the main cause appears incorrect airspeed climb angle for the tumble. I.e the entry gate was violated and physics is not very forgiving from that point on.
The pilot appears to be extremely experienced as are most that get bitten this way.

Re: 5% per year
That video was hard to watch.
The older I get the bigger the yellow stripe down my back gets. When I do aerobatics, and I will readily admit my skills are not in the same league, I leave a lot of room under me to fix any f*uckups on my part. The take home for any recreational aerobatic pilot is even the pro's mess up and and when you are that close to the ground there is no second chance.
I respect the level of skill of these low level aerobatic performers but the fatal accident rate is ridiculous. I am really starting to wonder if the show is worth it........

Re: 5% per year
Well, we got our last 2 over the weekend, looks like an overbanked Cessna (like that American B-52 a few years back)in Boliviahttp://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news ... nt-6226648, and a Gnat in the UKhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... shire.html
Forgot the one in Russia. http://video.latino.foxnews.com/v/43962 ... -air-show/
And the Irish BD-5J at about the same time. http://www.pilotweb.aero/news/bede_bd_5 ... _1_4170905. Over 7 and only early August.
Found some footage of the Gnat. http://youtu.be/j-ar0KCMHGo. Not such a mystery, split-s (or reverse Cuban) too low, not enough pitch up at initiation, possibly due to lower ceiling. Subsequent tight pull half snapped him around into the ground. RIP, he left a young family behind.

Re: 5% per year
It's hard to tell exactly from the camera angle, but it looks to me like it was a flat manoeuver, not a split S or Cuban. Just a "tight turn away from the crowd" that pulled too much G and initiated a snap.karmutzen wrote:Found some footage of the Gnat. http://youtu.be/j-ar0KCMHGo. Re: 5% per year
Early rumours have the NY Giles 202 with a structural failure separating the tail from the fuselage. https://youtu.be/4LG_G8m6cjw
Not sure if we can add the New Shoreham pilot yet, he's still in a coma. 11 bystanders dead though. Swiss airshow the next day had a fatality from the three formation of C42B that mid-air'd.
Way over 5% this year.

Re: 5% per year
In quotes because it is a cut and paste from someone else from another forum....
"A Pitts S-2B crashed yesterday at an Airshow in Austria. Pilot lost its life, no spectator was hurt..https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=179134
http://kaernten.orf.at/news/stories/2729019/
looks like a Pilot error....2.5 shoulder rolls on the 45° downline and then tried to do another roll, very low with a panic reaction and hard pull after half roll."

Re: 5% per year
Yes - and we still have September to go. I doubt this is the last.
Re: 5% per year
And another one bites the dust, or the ocean in this case. Salvador, Brazil. Today. Pilot was recovered alive but later died of his injuries.
