The worlds newest Spitfire

Post by fleet16b »

Congratulations to Vintage Wings of Canada ; the Mk 9 Spitfire has completed its first flight
This aircraft is a data plate restoration that according to Spitfire Authority Peter Arnold started out with nothing more than a corroded firewall. The aircraft represents Spitfire mk 9 Y2K that was operated by the RCAF during WW2

Apparently they were trying to keep a lid on it but this link went out yesterday. It's in no way a secret.
Kind of hard to hide a Spitfire out on the ramp of a public airport.
VWC has been publicising this rebuild from the get go , especially that its almost done so its no surprise that people have been watching the ramp
The official VWC Photog is not too happy that he was scooped . He comments on this within the comments section of the link

Wow, what a crybaby. I did aviation photography and know what it's like to get scooped, but I know full well that the early bird gets the worm, and if I wasn't the early bird that someone else would be. The VWC Photog should have hauled his butt out of bed that day and made his own video faster if he wanted the story for himself.

They have been updating the public about this restoration all along.
Their website even warned people that the first flights were coming
It was inevitable that someone would be there to witness it

Lets not let this detract from the achievement. I watched this thing come together over the last few years one rivet at a time. The wings were built from scratch in a jig at vintage wings. Those lovely elliptical wings are incredibly complex and watching them do it panel by panel was incredible. Then reaming them to fit the fuselage fittings .. one shot to do it right. Yikes. English wheel to make all the fuse fairings and cowl. A real work of art.

Yes, the Y2K Spitfire, Vintage Wings took over the restoration a number of years ago.
