Flight Dispatcher

Post by cmoreno55 »

Hello all,

I have been researching a career in flight dispatch and I have heard that there will be a growth in opportunities in the next couple years due to people retiring, I was just wondering if there is anyone that could shed some light on that.

I am looking into taking this course that prepares me for both of the TC Exams as well as gives me an air operator radio license. They also provide me with their own certificate of completion. (I'm sure this will help gain employment)

Any other general information is welcomed about the career.
Ive heard wages rage from 40-60K yearly to start.

Thanks all,
C

G'Day,

Only 'course' I can think of is Harv's Air (pilottraining.ca). There may be other services online that provide similar training, although you'll have to look that up yourself. Harv's provides the radio license (50$) and the dispatch course (a wooping 400$) as well. It's been a good while since I took a PT.ca GS (ground school) but I'm pretty sure they provide a letter of completion of some sort. If not you can request one and they will gladly help you out with that.

Now for the dirty truth, a letter of completion is pretty much useless. Good to have for your own papers if you want sure. But arguably, basically useless. The real value are the RIC-21 (Study Guide for the Restricted Operator Certificate With Aeronautical Qualification) and TC Dispatch licenses in hand. Having the 'certificate of completion' won't make you any more attractive to employers. What will, is experience in the field, dispatching will help a lot. You can start small by maybe working at a flight school or club. It will help you build experience and get your mind molded around the whole industry as a whole and learn to adapt to a new operation. And after a while maybe seek for something a little larger: 703 operator or the sorts.

Jumping straight into a dispatch/operations position with no former experience is very possible, but is also a steep learning curve.

Just my opinion, I think many will agree (or disagree).

EDIT:

found this too, more costly, but maybe what you're looking for:

Check online for Colleges and Universities offering Flight Dispatch or Operations courses too. There you'll get your certificate/degree showing completion of the course. Also, check this thread, I'm sure there are plenty other threads here on avcan:

Do a search on the topic and you will find a lot of replies to answer your questions. There are courses available and most if not all air perators who have either Type A or B Operational control systems will not even hire you unless you have written the TC exams

I would suggest the link posted above: http://www.flightdispatchtraining.ca/di ... rstart.asp

That course is done by Dario, who also does the internal dispatch prep course for WestJet/WestJet Encore employees trying to get into dispatch.

Also, from what I heard, so dont quote me on it, the success rate of the internal course (which I dont see why the external one would be any different) is something like 98%.

Once you've passed the prep course, go pass your exams, get the radio license and apply. Encore is frequently hiring.
They will take you without experience, somehing mainline wont do, because now they do like the pilots: flow from Encore to Mainline.

I did this course about 2 years ago after spending a year struggling to study on my own due to all the stuff TC lists as being required knowledge. After doing the course and a bit of self-study I passed both exams and am now a dispatcher in a 705 operation. I highly recommend it. It is however a very condensed course and if you do not have a basic background in aviation you may struggle. They prep you for the tests and give you the information you need to succeed. The worst part overall is the facility that they use is a dumpy hotel in Scarborough. If you'd like more info just PM me.
