I have no time in that Husky, or any other, but I'd really like to see some of those log pages for a writing project of mine.

Can you please email me at: photomctavish__at___hotmail.com.

Cheers,

I have about 10 minutes riding as a swamper in that aircraft CF-EIM. Then the engine self destructed and we landed west of Digby Island. My first day on the job. There are several guys around that flew EIM before and after that.

Looks like Jack was flying this one quite a bit, I'll dig up some other names and pass them on. Some of the DC3 paperwork was fro Air Nigeria and the UK.

duCapo,

That West Coast Air old school original ball cap that’s now hanging on your office wall was graciously given to me by Antique Pilot when he had me over for dinner several years ago in YWG.

Trust both of you are doing well!

Spent many hours flying in and fixing that Husky.
Pilots at the time were Reg and Clyde.

Now that aircraft would have probably made a fine turbine conversion. Back up on the beach and just let the drums roll. Low on gas, no problem just add some from that drum you have on board.

I have several flights in EIM. Reg was checking me out in the Husky-- Port Simpson,Alice Arm,and I believe the last one we ended up in Thurston Harbour.
Jug replaced on each flight. Took a job in Africa, and never completed the checkout.

I have about 8 or 9 hundred hours in CF-SAQ, serial #8 when it was owned by Parsons Airways, Flin Flon Man. That was before the engine change. CF-SAQ still had the R985 which made the airplane a noisy motor boat on a hot day.

Hey TPC,

How’s it going? We are good. Pickerel and wild rice shipment is just in. +36c here this weekend so pool will get a workout. Re the ball cap...did you mean North Coast Air Service not West Coast?

Here is Husky serial # 2 C-GCYV at Vancouver. Original reg was CF-EIL. In August 1984 I was asked to help get her back in shape and ferry to Winnipeg. It had been sitting outside by the Air Canada hangar for a few years (maybe a lot of years). After a few days we finally decide we are ready for a test flight. High time former Husky Pilot is flying and I am in the right seat with the old portable VHF radio. After take off there was a problem with prop control. Lots of noise, not much air speed, hard to hear tower yelling at us. Tower says to land on Rnwy 12 and hold short. Had to use hand signals to communicate with pilot. After touch down the right brake locked up and we ran off the runway about a 100’ from the threshold. Tailwheel folded up in the belly. I asked the tower if that was short enough. Wonderful memories.

AP, sorry to jump in on this thread but I am interested in some of your pics from the Red Lake area for personal reasons. I can't PM you as of yet but would like to directly connect if possible.

Thanks

I have time in both EIR and SAQ when flying for Island Air out of Tahsis in the early 70's. For sure one (if not both ARML moment) had been converted to the Alvis. WE all referred to it as the Wallowing Wonderbeast.

What i remember most vividly about the thing was taking off out of Kyuquot Harbour BC one day, just as I was coming up on the step the seat came adrift of the rails. I recall as I anded on my back seeing a large tree top looming in the window and leaving scratch marks on the pedestal getting up to pull off the throttle. After a onsite bush repair flew back to the Tahsis base.

IMO the DHC-2 was more of a pilots airplane.

My bad G! You are absolutely correct!
Trust your summer is going well. Hopefully that lovely classic car of yours is running strong despite the warm summer you’re enjoying!

All the best,

I believe there was a plan to retrofit the husky with Leonides engines. Barney Lamm was in partnership with Harrison Airways to do the work in Gimli but it faded and never really happened. I think there were a couple converted but never was a success. There were never any thing but good said about the airframe design but performance was poor with the junior. I never had the pleasure but was entertained a few times.

From the CAHS Journal Vol 19, # 4, Winter 1981:

There were 12 Husky’s built. Of these 5 were converted to the Alvis Leonides engine. Engine conversions started in 1956. Of the remaining 7 not converted 5 were written off fairly early in their lives due to various causes: hangar fire, windstorm, possible pilot error prior to 1956. The remaining 2 not converted were written off in 1964 and 1965.

One more thing,

Husky serial # 1 BQC flew for various operators in northern MB and NW ONT starting in about 1958. In 1964 it was with Holiday Airways out of Red Lake with the Amodeo boys. I can’t figure out when it was converted to the Alvis Leonides but probably after it’s time in NW Ont.
