Top Paid AMEs

Post by TurboPropMech »

Hey Guys,

I am starting to gather resources and put together a list of the top paying companies for AMEs in Canada. Obviously I can find some CBAs but not all wages are available. I am looking for the top step, top pay for a liscensed/endorsed AME. I would like your take. A top 10 sort of thing would be great. I am looking for the name of the employer and the top base wage, if you have it. I want to compare all types of AMO, airlines, MROs, Manufacturers, charters, FBOs etc. Anyone looking to employee an AME. Any and all responses are appreciated. Please, no comments about how crappy aviation is, how low the wages are, just looking for real info and opinions on who pays the most.

Sample response list:
1) Air Georgian - $44.91
2) Sunwing - ??
3) Air Transat - ??
4) Jazz - $38.19
5) etc.......

It's hard to give an hourly wage... most pay structures are not very linear that way.

At AC:
2018 top wage for LAT 5 : 41.23$/hour
Premiums
Tank Sealer: 150$/month
Trainer: 150$/month
Endorsement premium: 450$/month for employees who hold between 1 and 4 endorsements
Supplemental endorsement premium: 150$/month/per additional endorsement (max of 5 per technician)
Midnight premium 2$/hour for hours worked between 23:00-07:00
The top wage is going up by 2% every April until approx 2026.

If you want a idea of a top wage: 41.23$/ht + (600/month*12/2000=3.60$/hr) (5 endorsement premium)+ (150$/month*12/2000=0.90)(tank sealer) + (150$/month*12/2000=0.90) (trainer)+ (2*8*170/2000= 1.36$/hr) (night shift premium)= 46.63$/hr
One endorsement premium: (450$/month*12months/2000hrs/year)=2.70$
One Endorsement ACA LAT 4: 41.59$/hr (38.89$/hr + 2.70$/hr)
One endorsement ACA LAT 5: 43.93$/hr (41.23$/hr + 2.70$/hr)
Final top equivalent wage without tank sealer or trainer premium: 44.83$/hr
Final top equivalent wage with either tank sealer premium or trainer premium: 45.73$/hr
Final top equivalent wage with tank sealer premium and trainer premium: 46.63$/hr
for the 2$ night shift premium, it doesn't cover the entire night so has an equivalent value of 1.36$(8 hours of the night shift are paid at 2$/hr)

Thanks, I really appreciate the information. Very informative stuff!
Where do you think AC and Transat rank in Canada as far as wage goes?

I don't have access to pay scales for Air Transat, Bombardier or Westjet but would imagine they are all in the same ballpark +/- 10 G

From what I heard Bombardier and Westjet are paying more than AC.

Westjet top scale is $40.17 plus 7-10% ACA pay, depending on years of employment.

Westjet; $40.17 X 10% ACA = $44.19, $44.19 X 20% ESP = $53.00/hour

It's always going to be tough to compare salaries. There are many variables to take into consideration:

-ESOP (employee share ownership plan) is usually voluntary and differs from company to company
-retirement plans are different at all the carriers
-Premiums throw distortion in the wage equation
-Profit sharing plans can add $$ but can be very irregular.

AC Westjet, Sunwing, Georgian, Transit etc count for what? 30% of licensed Engineers in Canada? Probably hard to put a % on it but there a whole lot of guys out there not working for these mentioned companies. What are they earning? And if you don't know whats the point of this exercise?

Interesting

It would be great if one of the AME associations or all of them could do a salary survey similar to what the AMT magazine did years ago, maybe they still do and i just cannot find it. If i recall they had region and large Airline, regional, corporate, and GA

it is a bit complicated with premiums, union dues, pensions, profit sharing etc.

There's never any mention of the helicopter side of things either. And extremely tough to give a blanket answer, with variables such as bush pay and flight pay. The smaller outfits tend to pay better than the bigger outfits, with less overhead.

That place will always be the last in wages because they have plenty of lifers who shit their pants for their jobs, young and old.
I imagine even they must short handed though.

I'm interested in this as well. I'm doing a study to see what AMEs are getting across Canada.
With the AME shortage only becoming worse, I imagine everyone will be upping their wages as well as bonuses (signing bonus, year end bonus, etc.)

So, this is the list so far...

Reliance Aerotech Services $55.00
WestJet $45.00
Air Georgian $44.91
Air Canada $42.05
Permiter $41.91
Air Transat $41.77
Air Inuit $39.39
KF Aero $38.64
Jazz $38.19
Skyservice $35.00

Anyone know anything for:
Viking
Avmax
JD Aero
Cascade Aerospace
Voyageur Aerotech

Many companies are now hiring contractors to make up the difference in staffing. I've been contracting for about 15yrs. Last year I billed out over $250,000 between 3 companies.

This year so far I've billed out $175,000.

Now despite billing out this amount, it does not exactly equate to my actual salary. But because of the advantages of writing off many things such as mileage, tools, accommodation, food, clothing, health care expenses, etc, it does make an awful lot of sense to contract.

But I do work away from home, and yes I work many long days, and often in unpleasant locations. However, I could easily still bring in over $100,000 working regular hours close to home if that was the type of work I wanted to do.
