I wonder how they define a "drone". I have a couple of radio-controlled planes that I sometimes fly at the football or baseball field when there's no games going on. They are just balsa and tissue, but I bet they weigh a little more than 250 grams. I'm not about to go get a f##in' license or paint registration numbers on them. That's ridiculous. They're no more dangerous or invasive than flying a KITE ffs. They're balsa covered with tissue paper! They're as dangerous as a ball of dryer lint!

i wish we could add memes here "That escalated Quickly"

anyway, I imagine the fine is listed in the 920 section of the new rules, Im guessing its like 5k fine and a year suspension of your pilots licence, all cause you didnt want to get a scale.out and weigh the thing. good luck with fighting the man there meatservo

"You can't pilot a drone while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or within 12 hours of consuming alcohol;"

12 hours? Isn't that more restrictive than being an actual pilot?

Leftoftrack I never said I was going to "fight the man" I just said I wasn't going to do it. I'll have to stop flying my little models, because I live in a forested part of the country and other than the sports fields in town there isn't anywhere to go. That's why I've been building small, light and slow-flying models. If one of my planes hit you, I doubt it could even knock your hat off. But now, not small or light enough.

I'm sure anyone can understand how frustrating it is having a hobby that's been harmlessly enjoyed by many responsible people and has required no regulatory oversight whatsoever, including some really, really high-performance model aeroplanes and helicopters, and then they invent those "drone" things which can be purchased and flown by the average asshole with a smart-phone, and the whole peaceful, harmless hobby of radio-controlled aeroplanes gets swept up by what a nuisance the "drone" enthusiasts have become. Thanks a lot jerks.

It's easy not to give a shit when it's not your hobby and you don't know anything about it, but when quietly flying a diaphanous little tissue-paper model plane in circles at a ball diamond, below the height of the backstop, is something you can be fined for doing without a pilot's license, and kids under 14 won't be allowed to do at all, then things have gotten stupid. Especially when you can take the exact same plane, take the radio out and fly it in the same spot completely out of control, and this is not something you can be fined for- because "free flight" models don't count as "drones"

I don’t disagree, food for thought;

Pretty sure you can get the "drone license" online pretty easily.

I did not read the new proposed regs but CBC quotes 50 kg, now that's a honkin big drone and anything lighter will not require a drone license - but CBC has been wrong before :smt040

I think we can all agree that the news typically oversimplifies and/or gets it flat out wrong, so why not go right to the source for info?
http://www.tc.gc.ca/en/services/aviatio ... aign=IP-EN

And the relevant Gazette:
http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2019/ ... 1-eng.html

Edited to add: I just read through the Gazette. It's fucking insane.

Am I to understand that you now need a drone pilot license to fly radio controlled airplanes that weigh more than 250g?

Not right this instant, but June 1st. Also, your RC airplane over 250g must be registered, with the appropriate fees paid up for both.

The rules are being put in place to protect the public. Registration fee is $5. pilot certificate is online and printed same day. All model aircraft and drones from 250g to 25kg. Below 250g nothing is needed. over 25kg, an SFOC is needed.

Pretty easy and cheap, I'd say.

I'm not super thrilled about having to keep a journey log and tech records for each model. There's some other unnecessary fluff in there too, IMO. It would have been nice to see the weight exemption being a little higher (I think 1 kilogram would still be fair) and maybe even a total exemption from most of those rules when operating from a MAAC-sanctioned flying field.

It is the reward we get from voting in a socialist form of government.

Eventually it ends up looking like Venezuela does today.

Yup after taking time to read the gazette it's pretty crazy - I know my drone flying will be in uncontrolled airspace and away in areas where there are no witnesses and no one to turn me in. Knee jerk reactions and stupid regulations -- arsholes jump on this and takes over 8 years to change FDT and they screw that up as well -- politics makes no sense. It's a joke.

It seems as though the plan is to have MAAC fields exempted from the CARs. A quick search for MAAC in CG2 finds this:

"While Part IX of the CARs applies to all RPAS, members of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) operating at MAAC fields and MAAC sanctioned events will be issued an exemption to certain provisions of the CARs. Under the Act, footnote 8 the Minister has the authority to issue exemptions to the CARs; the exemption will be issued to MAAC before the end of the coming into force of the Regulations."

Bet you wont be saying that when a plane your mother or daughter is on gets frigged up from a birthday drone.

Just ban them outright. Its only half bald fat dudes that fly them.

I don't own a drone yet, but for fun & giggles I quickly read through the website and the required knowledge list and paid my $10 and wrote the 35 question exam for the basic licence. I passed with a high 80's mark and printed my license. I'm good to go although these rules don't take effect until June 1 of this year. There is a two year refresher requirement similar to a Pilots Licence.

Reading through this forum some of the questions brought up are very relevant. So to the poster with the balsa wood remote controlled aircraft. If it weighs over 250 grams you do need the basic licence. They define a drone as any flying object with no human onboard. You must keep the licence with you and present it to any law enforcement or Air Transport Inspector upon demand if you are operating a "drone". They will let you keep it electronically on your phone or in the Cloud.

With the basic licence you must familiarize yourself with the local airspace and only operate in Class G airspace and you are only allowed up to 400 AGL. You must stay a minimum of 3 nm from "any" airport or 1 nm from "any" heliport. You must at all times give way to any aircraft you observe operating near your drone. You must remain clear of humans 100 feet horizontally and there are restrictions around animals, homes and private lands and emergency zones such as crime scenes, forest fires etc. All flights must be with the drone in sight. Any incidents or accidents involving another aircraft or injuries to persons or damage to property must be reported to TSB as soon as possible. Your drone must be registered and have ident marks on it. That way crashed drones can be identified. Not a bad idea IMHO.

To those wanting to operate at any entertainment event you will require the Advance Licence which is almost as onerous as a Private Pilots Licence. You will require the ability to communicate with ATC or FSS if within controlled airspace and around crowds or closer than 100ft to homes etc. I believe there is a flight test from a trained drone observer required also. There are elementary maintenance and tracking of all maintenance requirements. Drones require manufacturers certifications to operate close to people. Basically the pro's, governments, law enforcement will all require the Advanced Licence.

Pretty common sense stuff which gives the authorities tools to stop the idiots and seize their drones or make them accountable if their drone is recovered doing something dangerous.
