Subaru EA81

Post by Saskguy »

I'm currently in the market for a new to me aircraft. One of the possible options is powered by a Subaru engine with a Johnson redrive. It seems like this was a popular choice in the past but I can't find any current information regarding Subaru's or the discontinued Johnson redrive. Does anyone here have any experience running these engines who can give me some information or advice?

I seem to remember that these drives had issues with keeping the belt centered on the pulleys. Also there was no out board support and the large pulley was on a cantilever shaft. I looked at them and went with a planetary gear drive, which eliminated the offset of the prop shaft from the engine crankshaft. There is a Zenair 601 at the Barrie, Springwater airport with one of these engine/drive combinations. If you are close you might inquire about it.

Regards,

Jim
