Gotta admit, I have only been in an aircraft with 60G80KT....but we were parked at the gate after not being able to make it out before the storm. 200knots seems like an exaggeration though.

Updated...just checked Allmetsat and it isshowing on there as the TAF from 4 hours ago. No metar though. Perhaps somebody didn't make it into work.

A Washington Post article says “On Sunday night, as the storm’s eyewall rammed into Grand Bahama Island, the storm was predicted to unleash wind gusts up to 220 mph”

I disagree. 200 knots doesn't sound like an exaggeration at all to me. National Hurricane Centre says category 5 hurricanes have sustained winds 157mph (137 knots) or higher. Add that to the predictions of 200mph winds in the Bahamas, I'd say a forecast wind of 80G200 is fairly reasonable.

Add to that “What if the A380 carried a cargo load of swallows that all started taking flight at the same time”

Isn’t there a performance chart for that?

In all seriousness though, I feel for all my colleagues in the Bahamas who have had to endure an entire day of hell.

I also wondered about the feather props on the smashed C 340. I wonder if someone deliberately feathered them before the storm approached to slightly reduced drag as it was faced into the wind. I guess not a bad idea. That said, I thing that the wind direction changes quite a bit as the hurricane passes over. The cowl is from a 172, as it's the top and bottom connected, I would expect that it was not on a 172 at the time. Loose cowls get pretty mobile in a wind. Seeing the damage to hangars at Freeport airport, I can imagine that the cowl had been inside a hangar, and was blown out. 'Sure is a lot of damage in the Bahamas, climate change is a real thing...
