New Plane Design, Transport Canada Regulations

Post by intoflying »

Recently ran into someone who said his company designed a plane and is looking to get it into production. Didn't have time to ask whether it's a kit or a fully manufactured plane like Cessna etc. Anyone knows about TC's regulations to get a new plane design approved? Is it easier to get approval in the US then import to Canada? Does the designer have to write manuals?

Given the millions of dollars it’s going to cost, asking for free anonymous advice on a website doesn’t seem to be a promising start.

It's not my project. Like I said, I ran into someone.

I’ll rephrase then: given the millions it’s going to cost, asking for advice from someone he “ran into” seems to be an inauspicious start. “Can you point me towards the nearest Sobeys?” - sure. “Should I certify my plane for production in the US or Canada?” - not so much.

There's obviously some confusion here. Let me paraphrase: I ran into a guy who said his company is putting a plane into production. I'm sure he and his company know exactly what they're doing, and they certainly did not ask me for any help, like you're suggesting. I, on the other hand, am curious what they're doing, hence my post here. I guess I can look up the CARS further to satisfy my curiosity, since no one here is interested in this discussion.

Well it's early days yet.

The Canadian aircraft certification requirements are basically duplicates of the US ones. So technically speaking, there's not much in it. I don't know which is cheaper but TC recently put all their prices up for this sort of thing, but then again the Canadian peso is currently at a 30% discount to the US dollar...

Could it be a basic ultralight? Anyone can build any flying contraption he dreams of, subject to the basic ultralight restrictions, and register it as such.

For a certified airplane, read CAR 521, then FAR part 23/25 depending upon size. Then read CAR 104, schedule V, fees, then you'll begin to understand the commitment to a new certified airplane design.
