Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
I got edited/censored by a mod for "LOL"ing it and being off topic in another thread... like all the threads on avcanada always stay on topic.
So let's make it on topic.
Which is it:
Airman?
Airperson?
Spellcheck only flags one... even woke Google returns "airman" when you search "airperson". How long will that last?
Will we have to check NOTAPs before flying soon?
Please refrain from cockpit vs. pussypit discussions, that will be saved for a later poll.

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
I prefer the cockpit and clitpit...
I guess I should write something here.

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
Can I add a poll on the projected lifespan of this poll?
Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
It's an important discussion completely relevant to our profession, use of common language, and the politician environment we are in today and how it affects us in this industry.rookiepilot wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 10:51 am Can I add a poll on the projected lifespan of this poll?
It doesn't violate any terms of use on avcanada.
Deleting the thread would be arbitrary.

How nice that you have nothing legitimate to complain about.
Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
I have three separate licenses that allow me to fly aircraft.
Airline Transport Pilot License fixed wing.
Commercial Pilot License Helicopters.
Commercial Gyroplane Pilot License.
Do they now issue Airman and Airperson pilot licenses?

Nobody:
Altiplano: How long will it be until we have to say “airperson”?
Reminds me of a discussion south of the border:

I'm not sure your reference - "Nobody"?iflyforpie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 12:37 pm Nobody:

It was used by a poster in another thread - "airpersonship" - to which I "LOL'd" in an non-offensive way, and was subsequently edited and censored by a moderator.
Since it's so obviously contentious, and over the top important that we are inclusive, I thought it must deserve a thread of its own to discuss it.
FAA, ICAO, and other agencies use the term "airmen" widely across correspondence and publications. It is the common language for the past century plus of flight. Does the overriding PC culture of today override that? Are female aviators marginalized by the commonly understood term? Can I still be an "Airman" if that's how I identify?
As for gun laws, in Canada anyway, they certainly are enforced, and now for the sake of cheap political points they're going to have to come take them away from my cold, dead, hands instead of dealing with criminals...
But anyway. Let's stay on topic.
Airman or Airperson.
Manhole or Personhole.
Mankind or Personkind.
Manned flight or Personned flight.

I hold an Airman certificate from the FAA.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
I decided to check my file where I keep my licenses and I'll be damned if I didn't find a temporary Airman Certificate issued by the FAA WP-HNL-FSDO , on the 17th. of Oct. 1994.by photofly » Fri Oct 11, 2019 4:01 pm

So I stand corrected there is an Airman Certificate.

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
Just for the record, I wasn't the censor!
I suspect that the originator of the term "Airman" didn't intend to imply anything with the suffix ~man - it was simply common usage at the time. Also, as there have been women involved with aviation since pretty much the get-go, I'm sure that they were quite happy to be an 'Airman'. That being said, language changes, social mores change, and so on, so why not switch to a more neutral term such as 'Aviator'?

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Along with " Licenses " and " Certificates " there are also " Authorities " issued for flying credentials.
I have one in my collection to fly legally.
Another interesting thing about flying is the most important certificate or approval one must have is your insurance approval, that trumps all the other pieces of paper when it comes to flying.

And for some kinds flying it can be extremely expensive to get.
