It's analogous to Seamen/Sailor, Airmen/Aviator.

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
What’s interesting is that originally pilots were only men, and a woman who flew (of which there are many famous examples) was called an aviatrix.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

If we were to ask someone like , oh say Trudeau to "Man up " Would it not be offensive to him? Perhaps "Fem up" would be more to his liking ? ( If he is still using the "feminist" angle to get votes)
Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
He would understand " Light up " far better. If we were to ask someone like , oh say Trudeau to "Man up " Would it not be offensive to him?

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
If your company went from a standard operating procedure of calling "positive rate" to calling "positive climb" would your internal circuits overload too? Changes in terminology are actually far less threatening to your well being than you may think. Nothing about you or what you are is under attack here.
If you let this kind of stuff rattle you, the next 20 years are going to be uphill.

That's a strawman argument.
We aren't talking about SOPs, we are talking about common language.

Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
If you compared our language of 2019 to that used in 1919, would there be a difference? Is one better versus the other? Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? Perspective is infinite. You're either really bored or really rattled here; that's my only fascination with this topic.

I'm old fashioned so Postman sounds normal. Post person sounds like someone who lacks intellect trying to over compensate for gender bias.
This silly stuff has gone on long enough to that letter carrier seems better.
The best is those titles to make people feel better about their job that are also gender neutral.
Sanitation engineer.
Petroleum transfer agent.
Prime minister.

Not rattled. Discussing. The only problem I had was being censored for noticing.
Airpersonship
Just sounds funny IMO.

^ yep, that was so embarrassing. Even the woman he responded to looked weirded-out.
Re: Airman vs. Airperson Discussion/Poll
Why not just refer to them as Pilot. No gender bias there..
I always thought airman sounded pretentious. But not because of gender.

Sort of like the term " Pilot in command ".
So by default when I am driving my car I am a " Driver in command "

You guys (and gals) have it all wrong.
Firemen are now firefighters.
Therefore, Airmen should now be referred to as Airfighters.

The only three things a wingman should ever say: 1. "Two's up" 2. "You're on fire" 3. "I'll take the fat one"

Harriet Harman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Harman) is a British politician on the left, who has always been in the struggle for equality. Her nickname is Harriet Harperson, which always makes me giggle.

Let me introduce you to my patron saint, George Carlin, who covered this very subject quite elegantly and can answer your question.CL-Skadoo! wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2019 6:02 am If you compared our language of 2019 to that used in 1919, would there be a difference?
