Coolest Airports in the Prairies

Post by dutchboy »

What are some of the coolest airports or strips you’ve flown to in the prairie provinces? Specifically some lesser known grass runways or just approaches you really like not at the big airports

Princess Harbour in Manitoba during summer. Not officially registered anymore, but kind of cool to land between the bushes. There is nothing there though.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Easterville(CKM6) Mb., the only way you can tell it’s a runway is the windsock, it doubles as a road to the dump(I believe), trees at both ends.

Drumheller, Ab is kind of a neat place. You can fly over/through the canyons.

It’s been a lot of years, but I remember Eastend SK being a neat grass strip to fly into. The Frenchman River valley is quite scenic.

Maple Creek is also good. Golf course and good restaurants within walking distance.

Bashaw, AB is pretty neat. It's a well maintained grass airstrip. 4000' long, if I remember correctly.

Drumheller, AB is really cool. When you take-off to the South, you fly right over the valley with a nice view of the town. The valley is beautiful and really fun to follow. Just be careful because the flight school at CEN3 uses the Highway 27 and Highway 585 bridge areas as practice areas. You'll hear broadcasts on 126.7 and possibly 123.2 for the "toleman bridge" or "morrin bridge"

Linden, AB also has a nice grass runway that's well maintained, but still isn't in the CFS. It's open to the public and is a North-South grass strip approx 3000' long? (I can't remember exactly) It's right beside the town, on the Eastern edge of town (you can see it on Google Maps.) Land there, and park just off the South-West edge of the runway near the road. You can walk West, across the street to Country Cousins restaurant for some amazing pie.

Lucky Lake, SK. I flew there with the intention of walking 400 meters to the gas station to fill up my jerry cans, and got picked up about 40 yards down the road! Lucky Lake, indeed :)

Go visit Bob Diemert at Friendship Field in MB. CJB2. Meeting Bob will tick the interesting box for sure.
