Any young pilots on here, go get a northern job now. I rode out the 911 crash with ease flying king airs. the north will not suffer like the rest of the country - medivac, sched service into the reserves will go on. grab a turbo prop job and honestly enjoy some actual fun flying.

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
I have seen 4 industry downturns. This one will be massive. It will take out everything from Float Operations to Wide Body Jet jobs and it will take a decade to recover, if it ever does return to the level we were at. Peoples investments are gone, interest rates are zero, so there is nowhere for governments to go in an attempt to ease the pain. This is a depression. The question now is not will people still be pilots. The question is. Will people be able to afford food? Will social order collapse? People have not started to miss paychecks yet. Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
I disagree, while the world collectively presses pause, the same people with the same dreams, drives and skills will be there to start up the demand driven engines of world trade once we get a handle on this like with a vaccine. The world will look different due to the eye popping levels of debt that are out there, but it seems everyone is on the same page. The world is a much different place then 1928.phillyfan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:40 am I have seen 4 industry downturns. This one will be massive. Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
This is by the far the largest downturn in aviation in history. It's a demand suppression though, and will bounce back quickly in a few months once the Covid 19 virus is under control. V shaped bottom and a buying opportunity of a lifetime in the markets.phillyfan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:40 am I have seen 4 industry downturns. This one will be massive. 100%. It may trigger a small recession but nothing that had an underlying economic cause.
Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
Did I just hear what I thought?
It's not for me to say. But unreal. I didn't think I'd see that... Let's put this behind us. I know it means nothing, but best hopes guys.

Yup just heard. Dang.
Says they will try to do other voluntary stuff first.
Maybe some of the original "owners" who sold their millions of dollars of stock can go enjoy the lakehouse permanently.

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
What bothers me is that the of 2 curves we keep seeing, the first one more people die, but it's over quickly. The second one, the health care system has time to cope but it drags on 3 times as long. We're literally sacrificing the good of the many for the needs of the few. Shitty catch 22 to be in.

How many pilots does Sunwing have?
I only have to think AC/Express will have to closely follow suit.
This is going to be a staggering number of people out of work.

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
How many pilots in total at WJ/Swoop and Encore?
Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
It's not shitty at all. It's basic ethics. I'll happily sacrifice your money so my relatives don't die. Not a difficult choice in any sense. In fact, without a second thought, I will sacrifice my money so your relatives don't die. See how easy this is?
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
Keep your chin up, folks. We'll get through this, however long it takes. My advice to any person in flight training - look closely at what's happening and if you still want it bad enough you got the bug
And don't throw all your eggs in one basket. Keep growing and learning, especially outside of aviation.
Stay in high spirits,
Soon to be laid off

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
It's a tough choice - catch 22 was said - and just to put out the contrarian idea...
People will die either way, and not just from the disease. With the shutdown of the economy families go bankrupt, people end up on the street, kids lose their futures... so some already health marginalized people can have slightly longer lives... the other side would be that if this virus is going to kill you, lock your door and be careful for the next 30 days, 60 days, whatever, and the rest of us that can handle a cold will keep the world turning.
However it goes... we'll all get out the other end, the world will recover.

Is that just pilots? Or are f/a's and others included in that number?GoinVertical wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 8:41 pm 691 WJ/Swoop

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
It was announced earlier that 50% or so of westjet FAs were going to be laid off, so those are just pilot numbersgoleafsgo wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:28 pmIs that just pilots? Or are f/a's and others included in that number?GoinVertical wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 8:41 pm 691 WJ/Swoop

This is a global economic disaster.
Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
I hope when you're older you'll have the same attitude and be willing to give up whatever life you have left so the greater masses can just get on with it.altiplano wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:07 pm It's a tough choice - catch 22 was said - and just to put out the contrarian idea...

I was just pointing out the other side of it and the fallout this flatten the curve tactic has...
It's not my choice the policy we've gone ahead with and I fully support what we're doing in my own actions because I want to see this work effectively and get us to a state of recovery as quickly as possible.
I do believe that, either way, people with marginal health do need to take additional personal responsibility for protecting themselves and limiting the potential additional burden they could create from becoming infected - ie.lock their door, rely on a family member or friend to bring groceries, see you in 30 days...

Nobody is safe. Not saying which northern carrier but it’s one of EICs 49% owned airline is also considering layoffs and LOAs. Dash sched service has been reduced and some have been cancelled. It’s not looking pretty up here.KAG wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:09 am Any young pilots on here, go get a northern job now.
