Post by BirdDog »

Hey Folks,

I was just wondering if anyone else on this forum collects any aviation memorabilia or anything else that may be interesting for that matter. I don’t know where or how it started but it has turned into a bit of hobby of mine.

I thought it would be interesting to see what or if anyone else on the board is collecting. Since, I brought it up; I’ll start it off…

Some of the stuff I have collected is primarily ex-military and of RCAF and RAF vintage from WW2 to present including wooden props, checklists, flight helmets, 02 masks, mae wests, seat-packs….etc. I am currently rebuilding a T-33 ejection seat and making it into a swivel chair for my home office.

It is pretty damn hard to find this stuff, surplus stores just aren’t what they use to be. EBay is alright at times but I’m sure there are tons of gems right here in Canada that aren’t advertised. Some of the stuff I would like to get my hands on include T-33 seat parts and an unserviceable radial engine (for another project that I am contemplating) but generally anything Canadian with some history to it.

So let’s hear what you’ve got or if you have a good lead for me, that would be great too!

Safe Flying,
Cheers!

I have been looking for a wooden prop for a long time; I see them on EBay but never have the cash. Maybe this Christmas...

Laminated wooden prop:

Original varnish. Original decals.

Hartzell Prop.

Hartzell, Ohio, USA

Design 707/80(90)
SR. NO. 25990
RPM 2000
A.T.C. NO. 457
H.P. 225

No longer likely airworthy. Some idiot put a stupid clock in the hub, which was removed but left a couple of # 4 screw holes about a quarter inch deep in the back of the hub.

I have the original prop log which shows it flew for 21.3 hours before the Anson it was on was scrapped.

It's probably NOT for sale.

WJflyer, did you build them? Are they factory or custom mahogany? I have just started getting some of the aircraft I have flown custom made out of mahogany… It can be done relatively cheap with custom paint to the specific aircraft you flew. My goal is to ultimately track the lineage of my career with these models.

Check Pilot, I hear you, while I do like some props with the clocks mounted in them, I generally like preserving with few exceptions. I am struggling with an S&S Aircraft Limited (out of Winnipeg with original decals) prop from a Crane. Some friends, both pilots and AME’s are split on whether I should re-finish the prop or leave it as is… I’m leaning more toward leaving it “as is” to preserve the authenticity … not to mention I really like the worn vintage look and the character it displays.

oldtimer, I’m, not sure if you were serious with the Lancaster chemical toilet or pulling my leg. In any case, I’m not sure where you would begin to find one but I may be able to help you with a cockpit chair from a Lancaster. Did you fly them? PM me and I’ll put you in contact with a guy that may have one. That goes for you to Fotoflyer with regards to a prop.

bigred, you want to hear weird… quick story …13 year old snot nosed kid back in the mid eighties getting his first ride in an aircraft… an SGU 2-22E glider to be exact…. But because he didn’t weigh 90 lbs soaking wet he couldn’t sit in the front like all the other kids (ballast reasons)…. So long story short, famil pilot took a large flat concrete plate stuck it under the seat cushion and voila…. The snot nosed kid got to sit up front…which ultimately launched my passion for the career I enjoy today…I still have the concrete plate. :D

Where’d who go?..... Thanks for the lead.

Safe Flying,
Cheers

I have an artificial horizon from the 50's find unservicable and removed from a B-18.
I also have a C-182's blade that I flew. If I didn't screw up my calculation, this particular blade passed roughly 27000000 time in front of my eyes (may sounds a lot but that's only 200hrs at 2300rpm)

And, ehehehe just received a wonderful B-17 diecast model in 1/48 scale 27" wingspand, 9 lbs. :smt003 (If any of you goes to see a Beech 18 this scale let me know)

Got it from them http://www.historicaviation.com/histori ... n/index.po

can't buy a real one so....

I have my grandfather's log books from WW2, and a few vintage training books. I also have a circuit switch from one of the first planes I ever flew.

Besides the link that Where'd Who Go? provided, do you have any other suggestions of where to look?

I've always wanted to visit an airplane graveyard. Are there any in Ontario, or Canada for that matter?

I have a DC3 jug. Always wanted to make a lamp out of it, but the "boss" is less than keen?
Also a main landing gear leg (new, in box) from a VooDoo? Dont know what I'm going to do with it though.
A couple of pistons....one from an Otter, and one from a Racer.

Isis, Wow....that is awesome. Make sure you preserve the log books and never let them go... you can make some serious money for those especially if there is any history... Resist temptation and hold on to them...that's gold! What did your grandfather fly?

As for the graveyard or bone yards....I'd absolutely love to visit them as well. None here in Canada...at least not in the same context...they are located in Arizona for a reason....it is very dry and the "bones" are less susceptible to corrosion...it also provides an effective storage place for other reasons. The weather is too volatile here in Canada to do the same... the closest to it I believe is in Markham Ont. where they store ex- CF aircraft until they decide what do with them...someone correct me here if that is inaccurate.

As for direction on where to look... the simple answer is it depends on what your looking for…..
For starters here’s a neat website:

CF stuff is kept at Mountain View south of Bellville. I believe the airport code is PZ3. If you're looking on a VNC it's just inside the bottom of the Trenton Control Zone.

I have a chunk of HS 748 brake pack. Got it from my Co-op job back in grade 12. It's about the size of a dinner plate. U/S, so I painted it white and got it signed by all the guys in the shop. It makes for an interesting yearbook. (way better than the crap published by the yearbook club, for 30 freakin bucks) I also had (don't rightly know where it got to) a window off a 748. That thing was the best toboggan you could ever want.

Thanks for the advice, BirdDog, allthough I have no intention of ever selling my grandfather's log books. They hold WAY too much personal value.

He was an officer in the Royal Artilery. Flew Austers on reconaisance missions. Fortunately, he was never in any direct conflicts, avoided quite a few, and helped plot targets accurately for the ground forces.

Well, I guess its settled... road trip to Arizona... who's in?!

Thank you once again for the websites... it'll be a long night of surfing tonight! Specifically, I'm looking for original training books, documents, etc. Don't really have the space for collecting parts - yet!

I've got a boost gage for a variety of WWII aircraft with merlin's. A.M. 6A 1221MK 3 Luminous Still in the wax paper wrapping with orgigional box and never used. Built in 1940. For sale or trade. Looking for WWII fighter artifacts like masks, helmets and parts as well. PM for details.
