What is a professional pilot?

Post by Cat Driver »

I started this thread in the wrong tone.

I like everyone post sometimes without really looking at the tone of the post, so with that in mind I shall start this thread with the simple question of what do you think a professional pilot consists of?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

They will have to have respect for LIFE. If they don't they are just another person who will hurt a lot of people. There is a time and place to play in the air. A professional know how to determine when.

The Bentlix(sp) if I recall correctly,

Travolta

Pro Pilot
Career Actor?

So with their interpretation, I don't know...

But I'd agree with peelot,
There is a time and place to play in the air. A professional know how to determine when.
You can d8ck around but a pro knows when to stop the horse sh9t and get to business and become serious(not to be comfused with becoming a nazi)

The bars are actually quite useful in places not N.A. as you will get much more cooperation and respect in your dealing with ground crew and gov't types if you wear 'em. Middle East, parts of Europe, Asia, Russia etc.

Keeping those who depend upon you safe - kinda like the doctors, "...do no harm..."

Great thread start for me as a 300hr guy.

I'd like to hear what "Cat driver" has to say about this one too,

I think a pro Pilot is someone who cares for his career as much as he woulld care for something very dear to him. Our career choice needs that respect, as we are holding whats dearest to others.

Ha unless you fly cargo ~

Webster Online Dictionary:

Main Entry: 1pro·fes·sion·al
Pronunciation: pr&-'fesh-n&l, -'fe-sh&-n&l
Function: adjective
1 a : of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession b : engaged in one of the learned professions c (1) : characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2) :exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace
2 a : participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs <a professional golfer> b : having a particular profession as a permanent career <a professional soldier> c : engaged in by persons receiving financial return <professional football>
3 : following a line of conduct as though it were a profession

Pretty much sums it up for me.

In everything you do around aeroplanes, take pride in doing it like a PROFESSIONAL. Set the example by exhibiting true AIRMANSHIP at all times.

None of us can say we’ve never thought about this age
old question. We have to think long and hard to do
this properly.

Can we sum it all up in a few sentences? I think we can
achieve a consensus if we concentrate on the first letter of
the word "professional". "P" stands for paid.

Dare I continue or do I risk offending some who insist
really good pay has no bearing on professionalism or
it is only a very minor part. Of course salaries of pilots
vary immensely depending on experience and luck. Some
even say it depends more on "who" you know (and blow)
rather than "what" you know!

;)

A true professional is one who does ordinary things extraordinarily well.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

"A pilot who makes more than 80% of his living flying aeroplanes. "

I know other industries which use this stipulation to separate professional from amateur.

Yeh, and being in aviation can expose one to other fields of knowlege.

Having been a pilot for so long I picked up other skills and as a part time job I'm a clap doctor.

Jeeses there I go screwing up my own thread...

Hey Cat Driver (or should I say Clap Doctor), do you think a "professional pilot" would use an MP3 player while flying?

BYW, how did you get the name Cat Driver???? Do you drive a dozer or snow cat?

Said by a man who obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Why we airline pilots are so fond of our bars (and you thought that all these years we were talking about uniforms).
