Departing high level controlled airspace

Post by 10milefinal »

Looking for some info to settle a bet between two pilots.

You've been cleared out of high level controlled and asked to report through 18,000. The destination airport is uncontrolled and you will remain clear of controlled all of the way in. With "cleared out of controlled", can you proceed to an approach fix at your discretion prior to descending through 18,000?

Thanks

What was your clearance prior to descending out of controlled airspace?

I would say go there.

Below 18000' go where you like.

Did they say "Cleared out of controlled in the vicinity of CY##" ? I would argue that in the vicinity could mean an approach fix and I did always find it kind of amiguous. As a rule though I wait till im down through 180 to proceed to a fix.
