Canada Goose Parkas

Post by BuckNiner »

Which parka would you suggest from Canada Goose? There seems to be about 20 different kinds now. Anybody have any suggestions?

I think, unless you plan on standing around outside for extended periods, the basic Snow Goose will work fine.
Everybody goes out and buys the biggest, fattest bloody parka they can get their hands on.....but guess what? Ya cant fly in them. You have to take the things off as soon as you climb aboard. I go with a fleecy, under a much lighter goretex type of shell, that way I can actually MOVE! The Snow Goose lives in the back. Along with a pair of old Sorels! Another waste of money! Unless you plan to stand around.....they are totally useless IN the airplane! I use a pair of Colombia lace up boots. Low cut, just above the ankle.....again you can move in them! Do them up just tight enough so you can kick them on or off without using the laces.
SOCKS.....these are the most important part of your ensemble! If your feet are happy, the rest of you will follow suit...one word here kids..SMART WOOL...Okay two words! You can get them at Marks, and you will never look back!

Good advice from Doc. For the most part the goose is survival gear more than anything. If you spend the night in the tundra you'll be glad you have it, but for day to day work they aren't really necessary.

I go with fleece pants and poly pro under the flight suit and it works fine.

I do like the ones the First Air crews have. They're half length just coming down to the belt, but still have the gargantuan hood with the fun fur. A little more practical.

Polyproplene then a layer of wool then fleece or whatever then down. You'll be warm even if you're skinny like me. Do those fancy Canada goose coats have a tough shell or will they ripped to hell after moving the first drill of the season?

How much does a typical Canada Goose parka run you?
I noticed they don't advertise the prices on the website, so I'm guessing expensive? :?

Parka- good value and warm is a heavy duck type parka with down insulation. The last one I purchased was at mark's Work Warehouse years ago. Theyare priced in various levels, and the lower tier products will all lose feathers over time. In Winnipeg you might try Workboot Factory Outlet 1500 Regent 663-0000, and in Lethbridge, Progress Clothing. I agree that it will be next to impossible to fly or drive in it. Way too warm and bulky. What is exceptonally warm and a very light fit is some of the snowmobile type jackets. I have a Polaris top that is made for the extra room of bib pants. Therefore it has room for wearing multiple layers below it. Most of them are a thinsulate insulation, but I have found that the branded products although slightly more expensive are extremely warm. Helly Hansen long gitch top and bottom, a fleece shirt, and the jacket are great. Fleece snow pants over the gitch are light and comfortable. Snowmobile bib pants are again very warm, but are difficult to fly or drive in.
Socks- The smart wool socks previously mentioned are the best you will find. Very expensive though. Almost as good and for 2 pairs for $10.00 are the Kodiak Brand Thermal Sock. I have found these at CDN. Tire and quite a few discount clothing stores.
Bellaclava and a toque are great compared to the hood with most parkas. At snowmobile stores you can find some really good versions with flip out faceplates. They are usually insulated at the portions that a helmet or toque wouldn't be. An excellent product is the fur or synthethic fur aviator cap with ear wings. This can be worn over the bellaclava instead of a toque. Although it's a bit of work, you can make cutouts for a headset sized so that just the earseals penetrate threw.
I have been an ice fisherman for years, and fly an open cockpit in the winter. And consider myself an expert on staying warm.
One last option is to watch ebay for a Mustang MAC 10 or MAC 100 flight suit at a reasonable price. They have come up for under $200.00 CDN and new retail at almost $700.00US. These will offer you exceptionally warm, fire protection, and floatation/water immersion protection. (you'll look and feel like a sartec..LOL)

I own the resolute parka. It's quite tough and rip resistant. It's had three full seasons up north and isn't anywhere near the point where it needs to be retired. It's quite honestly the best money I've ever spent in my life.

Couldn't agree more endless!

I have the resolute, had it for about 7 years now! Pretty tough, and extremely warm! I always wear a fleece vest under it, as it's to bulky to wear in the seat...unless you loose cabin heat (hey that rimes)! I was hot in Severn at -35 with a 10 knot wind out of the north. They are a little pricey though! :)

Bought my Resolute in 2000 and have had it drycleaned every July since then. No issues. Perhaps a negligent drycleaner on your part?

I bought the Snow Mantra online for the price of a Resolute! Especially once you take into account that it's just GST and no PST. Even after shipping it works out pretty good.

Check out LeBaron's web site and look at the fall/winter supplement.

No change in colour, minor lint in the velcro, definitely no damage to stitching anywhere, a little "bending" of the metal rod that runs around the hood.

Still looks pretty good after 5 years.

I have the HeliArctic, its a little shorter cut than the Resolute and doesn't have the useless plastic pocket on the arm. Other than that pretty much the same. Wouldn't leave home without it.

What?? You guys dry clean your parkas?? Just let 'em get good and dirty! Clean parkas look so.....shall we say, gay?......plus, after about ten years, your parka will be so soaked with oil, grime, jet-b and the like, that, if you ever go down(in the bush, you pig!)you can use it as fuel for the fire! If there's enough ground in grime, it should produce a lot of smoke...and burn for three days! Providing both warmth and a signal!!

If u are in Winnipeg, there is a place called Odd Lots that has last years jackets for cheap.
The Resolute was 285.00 with tax and the Mantra is approx 350.00+ tax.
The only problem with them is that they have odd sizes and a limited selection.

The other way to buy one, is to order it from out of proince so you only have to pay one tax. The only thing you have to watch for is that the shipping fee is less then the one tax that is taken off.

Reg price for the Mantra this year is approx 650.00 and the Resolute is 550.00.

It seems when you wear a snow goose over a flight suit you're basically just wearing a collection of pockets with some material sewn in between.

:D

great coats though for temps colder than -20C (depending on wind!!)
