CNE airshow noise

Post by Heliian »

Holy moly, I dislike loud noises and incessant droning as much as anyone but 1 weekend a year for an airshow is perfectly acceptable.

Social media needs to be banned for giving dummies like that a platform. HELLO! IT'S FRIGN TORONTO! not a quiet town in the country, just get out if you can't handle it.

I love social media.
Ok hear me out, can we like…pay the air show to NOT happen? Like buy them off? Because I feel like they are flying their stupid planes INSIDE MY BRAIN.
Somewhere where there’s plenty of room to host an airshow, clearly.

I did wonder why we hadn’t had the obligatory “but think of the refugees” - and now we have.

Underscores the serious mental health issues in Toronto, even if they are “lawyers”, “policy experts”, etc. They don’t know their head from their ass.

Noise isn’t simply an irritation or an interruption to peaceful moments. Loud sounds stress the body and can lead to a host of serious health problems, like high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. Research shows that noise pollution in the U.S. is more severe in communities with lower socioeconomic status, and in areas populated by people of color.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends not being exposed to more than 85 decibels during an eight-hour period, but we don’t turn our ears off the moment we’re finished at work. So for many people, once you’ve added a loud commute and trying to sleep in a noisy neighborhood, you get a cumulative effect that will start to impact your health. “Noise increases physiological arousal, which releases stress hormones,” says Stephen Stansfeld, emeritus professor of psychiatry at Queen Mary University of London. “There’s a risk of high blood pressure, hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes. Recently, evidence has related environmental noise to diabetes, and on what’s called the metabolic syndrome—the body’s chronic response to stress.” Researchers are constantly discovering new consequences: “There’s at least one study that suggests it might be related to depression as well.”

You know what is relaxing… watching the snowbirds perform. They should try going to an air show.

Exposing 4.5million people to go to a loud air show in an already obnoxiously loud city is not nothing.
Most developed counties have identified noise as a huge detriment to quality of life of their communities.

Give me a break. The airshow is a couple hours a year. It’s advertised well in advance so if it bothers someone that much they can take a cruise on the ttc to get away from it.

Yes, noise can be very detrimental to one's sanity, but the reasearch is being done about constant noise. I hated living in a city for that reason, but the noise that bothered me was the constant drone of cars and trains, not the once a year carnival or car race event.

I'm surprised they'd even notice. When I'm downtown, there's a constant roar/hum in the air from all the trains, cars, motorcycles, AC units etc.

Yeah, Toronto and the peoplekind in it are shitty.

What a goofy thread. This isn't about airshow noise, it's about the noise in a big city. If a person is detrimentally affected by noise then they should reconsider living in one of the noisiest cities in the country and not focus blame on a specific event like an airshow. Ending the airshow will not end the problem.

A lot can be done about the noise. Simply attributing it to “big city” “downtown” is not satisfactory. Much has been written about the issue already. Weather people care is another. Writing people off who have a desire for positive community change shows lack of understanding.

Many large and small cities around the world are recognizing the issue by doing something about it rather than pretending excessive noise is not a problem and that nothing can be done about it. Some places in Canada are trying. I can think of #projectnoisemaker in Peel Region. Vancouver has very strict control over time-of-day construction.

Many people would consider the airshow positive for the community.

So yeah, get a life.

Once again, we are talking about noise for a few hours A YEAR! Not something like construction that’s ongoing for months or years.

The noise from the Gardiner continues 7x24. Well they're taking down the Gardiner in fits and starts, dumping the traffic onto Lakeshore and local arterials producing even more fumes.

Air traffic including the airshow is less than 0.1% of the local noise and exhaust pollution from cars.

People value being able to drive their personal vehicles around more than an airshow. Driving around may be seen as a necessity, airshow is just for fun and only for a select few who care to watch it.

Saying "only a select few" is an assumption on your part. There are more then just a few, which is why the show has been put on year after year for decades and is one of the few 3 day airshows in Canada.

Also, with respect to overall noise contribution in the metropolis of Toronto, it's just 3 days out of 365 days in a year (0.8%){edited: oopsie} and only for a few hours each day.

Your arithmetic is off by a factor of 100.
