Unicorn variant is spreading like a bastard. Mockdowns imminent.... Big announcements coming soon... probably layoffs and airlines shut down. Nearly a quarter of all covid cases in Ontario are the new variant, by the end of the week it will be half of the cases. Experts are alsop saying if youre vaccine was over 3 months ago you are just as likely to get infected with Unicorn as a non vaccinated.

Of course it’s effective. Effective at making the CEO and shareholders richer!

Stopping Kung Flu? Not so much.

It’s been very eye opening to watch how events have unfolded with the new scariant.

Simon ( aka science) says this thing is mild…

It’s interesting to see the Canadian politicians and healthcare officials wigging similarly and sensationalizing the new variant but focusing on case numbers as opposed to serious illness / hospitalization

So if I understand correctly, what these guys are saying is, "Go about your business. This will be over in less than a month. There's nothing we can do about it that won't drag it out for years."

Airlines are the opposites of schools as dr. Moore just stated, schools are last to close first to open… airlines will be first to close and last to open.

This is incredible. This certainly will lead to more lockdowns. More mandatory vaccination mandates. More restrictions.

How can the aviation industry recover when the government can impose crippling restrictions at the snap of a finger?

I certainly hope the call tonight will not be too aggressive… sadly I think we’re all screwed.

Didn't the Government say back in early 2021, get your shot and another and life will go back to normal? So much for normal...

Also herd immunity would be reached at 50%, oh sorry 60%, oh crap 75%, and so on.

Here is the rumour.

You were told if you got vaccinated life would be normal. Look at all you complying vaccinated airline employees about to get Trudeaus rubber fist.

You keep saying that. But nobody was told that - nobody *could* be told that, because nobody was in a position to be sure that was true.
If we get/got vaccinated, that is/was the best way to get life back to normal. But there were, are, and will be no guarantees.

If anyone is trying to change the narrative, it's you, by making up things you wish politicians and doctors had said so they can now appear to have been wrong.

The thing is, we could go back to normal, if not for all the fear mongering. Yes, people should get vaccinated if possible, but if they don't want to, all the online mud-slinging or pathetic anecdotal government funded commercials or titillating news stories attempting to scare people, realistically aren't going to change their mind. This is a virus that overwhelmingly targets the frail, the sick, the elderly. This is not unusual. This is natural selection. This is how we and every other species on this planet evolved to this point. Eat healthy. Exercise. Maintain an appropriate body weight. Get vaccinated. (If you do these things, and you're younger than the average life expectancy, the chances of you suffering serious effects from covid are almost zero.) Treat people the way you would like to be treated, regardless if they hold opinions that differ from yours. Pester your elected government officials for more health care capacity for those that will need it in the future, considering this virus is here to stay. We don't need to live the way we have been for the last two years. Covid isn't going away. This should be abundantly clear at this point. Why waste your life living in constant fear, or angry at your fellow man as though they are intending to hurt others? This is all so stupid. You don't have to allow yourself to be captivated by fear. It's a sad, weak way to live your life.

Says someone who isn’t frail, isn’t sick and isn’t elderly. And who neither knows nor loves anyone who is. Happily, some of us give a shit about those people.

Oh cool. A sad anecdote with no relevant data that we didn't already know.

Is there a particular part of my post you take issue with? Was it the part where I suggested you should try to be healthy? Or the part where I said you should get vaccinated? Oh no, I got it. It's the part where I said you should be nice to people. Do you advocate continuing to live this way in perpetuity, attempting the same efforts that have been fruitless thus far?

Natural selection will come for all of us eventually, no matter how advanced we think we are. Might as well act accordingly.

Hahaha of course Photofly puts in their 2 cents. Can’t stand a comment questioning covid mandates going up without coming up with their backhanded, belittling and flippant reply.

Ok back on topic. Should the borders be closed, within the framework of all the LOUs and MOAs, how soon could the company start laying off again?

Well said. I don't buy any of the vaccine conspiracy bullshit, and I think people should get it. BUT, It's their choice not mine. I cannot stand the amount of division this shit has caused, absolutely everywhere. This forum is full of people who if there was no such thing as covid and the vaccine would probably all get along, and enjoy sitting around with a beer and shooting the shit about aviation. Instead, it's a bunch of people who hate each others guts. It is sad.

I don’t really think any layoffs will happen. Only because I think we have to remain optimistic. Maybe slow down some recalls, but hopefully not.

Problem is all these industries being impacted can’t just flip on a dime every time a variant comes out.

Seems like the premiers were not behind hard lock down measures. Only a Non-Essential International Travel ban. Jason Kenny in Alberta loosened restrictions 1hour before Federal announcement.

Not a ban, just an advisory. An advisory that I don’t think will make a lick of difference to travel numbers. Everyone is tired of listening to the government.

Most people actually have no clue.

Also all the different "efficacy" rates really can't be compared. All the vaccines were tested in different places at different times of the year etc.
True to a certain extent but that's why there's a control group. Perhaps efficacy changes with the season, location, etc but this would largely be negligible IMO.

CYERCaptainPooping wrote: ↑Fri Dec 03, 2021 10:08 am What is the vaccine 90 percent effective at exactly? What does that even mean?
Good question.

Efficacy is the percentage of fewer cases in the treatment (vaccinated) group vs control (placebo group). For example 10k people are enrolled in the trial. Randomly, 5k are given the vaccine, 5k are given a placebo (saline injection). No one other than the trial administrators know what group the patient is in. Neither the doctors treating the patient nor the patient know what group the patient is in until the study conclusion ("double blind").

After 3 months, let's say 50 people in the control group get Covid and 5 people in the treatment group get it. The trial administrators then look at what group each person is in and tabulated the results. This is a vaccine efficacy (aka effectiveness) of 90%.

In case your wondering, the consequences of falsifying the data by the trial administrators can lead to lawsuits and professional consequences so it's pretty rare that that happens. (Google Andrew Wakefield)
