Air Transat Dual Engine Flameout

Post by pelmet »

Sounds odd....inlet icing? They got the engines started again , so I guess it wasn't a fuel issue.

"C-GUBL. an Air Transat A330-234 aircraft (flight TSC 326) was at the de-icing facility in
Toronto/Lester B. Pearson Intl. (CYYZ), ON prior to departure. While parked the #1 engine
performed an auto-shutdown. While the crew were performing their procedures and with the APU
not operating, the #2 engine also auto-shutdown (Rolls Royce Trent 772B) . The flight crew was
able to re-start both engines and taxied to the gate. The aircraft was removed from service pending
investigation by the operator and Rolls-Royce, the engine manufacturer."

Except this time a smarter and better captain took the correct decision.

Is there not a little dialogue box which pops up on a screen and asks; "Are you sure you want to shut down this engine? <Yes> <No>". So if some auto function is making it's own decisions, at least an alert pilot can interrupt!

I was thinking the same thing unless it’s a ground vs air logic

Oh, give it it a friggin rest. One was taxiing to a gate, the other was over the Atlantic. Every scumbag on here who resents Robert Piche has the same drivel as you do.

This incident was during the winter storm in the GTA. A direct quote from the captain, a friend, "the engines were at idle for 2 hours in 2 feet of snow" The core of the engine was full of ice. After all inspections from the company and RR were completed, the airplane returned to service. It was inside the hangar for about 48 hours, for maintenance and thawing out.

AC has a procedure to advise the pilots when certain winter conditions exist to inform taxiing pilots to return for engine ice removal on engines such as CFM. I believe it is created in-house to prevent blade damage.
