Covering Letter Etiquette?

Post by mmm..bacon »

What's the etiquette when you're applying to a job where you personally know the CP?

"Mr. Smith" seems way too formal, but OTOH "Bill" is way too casual..

(and yes, I'm reaching out on the phone, where it's definitely "Bill")

If it a "formal" application that others will view I would suggest use of his full name and title.

In convesation something less formal seems appropriate, go with Bill, Willy or what ever "pet name" you two usually call each other.

I would address it to "Captain bill'slastname" Cover letters are the definition of a formal business letter. If you want to attach it to a personally worded email that's OK, but cover letter is for HR record. If Bill's company has an HR department that may use resume screening software, make sure to use key words like teamwork, leadership, problem solving, communication, etc. You don't want to risk Bill being overridden by HR no matter how much he loves bacon as well.
