Westjet/Sunwing and Flair Competition

Post by 777Aviate »

How will the acquisition of Sunwing by Westjet and Onex affect the competition in the ULCC market in Canada and for the sun destinations? Hunter did mention that the government loans and other credit facilities they pulled from did not offer favorable interest rates and payment scheds to them so how would the balance sheet of Flair be looking right now with the amount of leverage they're expanding with?

I really don't see how you can compare the 2 situations. They are completely different....

Kind of apples to oranges if you're pitting the Sunwing side of the business to Flair. Tour operator vs ULCC.

In terms of Westjet's reach to sun destinations, sure it gives them access to more market share. But Flair isn't really deep into it themselves. Also many of Westjet's sun destination travellers are packaged through vacations. Flair does not offer this and there are likely no plans to.

I don't think this move effects the competition between Swoop and Flair at all, Unless Onex starts painting orange planes Pink. Even then we all know Westjet is painting planes pink at a rate of 1:1 with Flair acquiring new planes up until they both reach 30.

The move is definitely going to effect competition with Air Canada and Air Transat ops this side of the pond, both of whom I guarantee are not going to take it lying down. Winter vacation season is almost over and regulatory approval is still required, so we likely won't see any changes before next November.

Also, apparently, there's a chance Flair might be getting barred from using Canadian airports soon. Something to do with them being in large part owned by a US company.

One would think there’s some clause in the NAFTA/CUSMA allowing this kind of thing?

Ahhhh No … the US would not tolerate a Canadian company masquerading as a “US controlled company”. Flair has even admitted that 3 of 5 board seats are controlled by 777 Partners, a US investment firm. There’s a reason that aviation pundits are telling airports to be cautious at the moment.

That’s not to say it all won’t work out in the end, it just looks very shady at the moment and maybe Flair will make the proper changes to work within the regulations. Everyone else has to follow the rules …

Follow the rules? Billions of laundered money flowing in here every month but a small airline is the only thing they'll take action on

I apologize .. didn’t mean to come across as a dick. I get your point, but the word government and hypocrisy are synonymous.
