AIRAT after exam feedback and questions

Post by joujou98 »

Hey guys

Here are some notes I wrote quickly after sitting the AIRAT two days ago. Sorry for the spelling mistakes (and sentences not making sense), I wrote it as quickly as I could so I wouldn’t forget the material. I remembered about 70 questions of the exam which, overall, I felt was heavily focused on aerodynamics, especially weird questions on angle of attack, wheelbarrowing, spins, stall speeds, …

I hope it helps!

Instrument rating instructor requirements 500 PIC with 100 in applicable group

Provide type rating training hours 50 total 10 on type

Time between spotting a conflicting traffic and taking evasive action 12.5 seconds

Angle of attack and induced drag relationship

Low speeds wheelbarrowing, one answer was because CL is behind CG, one is because of ground effect, can’t remember rest

Downslope runway and terrain approach (both downslope…), I put illusion of being too low tending to approach high and steep

Student thinks airport is at 10nm instead of 30nm at night, I put because of clear weather

24 months recurrence training

12-24 months expired instructor rating
Only a flight test, no written

Hyperventilation symptoms, I put tingling in the fingers and extremities

Instrument flying keypoints (scan, interpretation, aircraft control)

L/D angle of attack with weight/altitude, I put the angle of attack decreases with an increased altitude

Va with 55 knots stall speed, 1.7x Vso

Stall speed for airplane in 45 deg turn, Vso sqrrt 1.41

Wing loading I put wing span to gross weight, not correct though

Stall angle of attack depending on turns/climbs, I put it doesn’t matter the « scenario », AoA for stall is always same

Stall angle of attack on ground is 13 deg, how will it change with altitude? Same angle of attack but higher TAS correct answer

360 forced too high high key I put take a wider turn

Laminar flow wing on I put slow aircraft for more lift, not sure and couldn’t find answer anywhere

Slot effect

PPL steep turns limitation 100 10 10

CPL en route limitation 100

Satellite base with class 4, other instructor needs to be class 2

Instructor hours to give training to non licensed pilots need 50 hours on class

Class 4 doesn’t need supervision for ultra light training

Airplane Equipment for OTT, Instruxtor and commercial

Unsatisfactory flight test record for attenuating circumstances, no follow up actions

FI Rating renewed within 90 days

Validity of written exam recommendation letter 60 days

SPP medical 1,2,3 or 4!

Vortex generators, delay separation of boundary layer

Negative incidence of tail why? Counteract nose down tendency of airplane due to CG behind forward of CP

Crosswind inputs on takeoff to decrease lift on upwind wing

Pitch stability because CG forward of CP

Yaw when changing power on small aircraft is due to torque

Dynamic control balances to prevent flutter NO to assist moving the surface

Thaw aircraft in hangar then towed out, watch out for : frozen crankcase breather line, water freezing on the wings,…

Downdraft on lee side of mountain can be expected

Error in spin recovery was putting full power when not established in climb yet

Wind conditions favouring taxi nose over

Effective fault analysis: attach same importance to an error with circumstances are the same

How do you obtain feedback on student workload and stress level? Look at them or ask them for their feedback in flight answer is look at them

Per flight briefing what will be done, where is the flight going and safety considerations

How is human factors different t for instructors? Based on attitudes more than knowledge and procedure

PPL landing limitations for centerline within 15 feet

Cross controlled stall, because of skidding turn

Forced approach in a logical sequence which learning factor relationship

Most common factor for not complying with ATC clearance is expectation

Most common error with Checklists
Not using it or not visually verifying the setting

Why night rating students should practice taxi with landing lights off

Ice on the wing leads to higher stall speed because of: weight of the ice added or because of disruption of airflow

PTR for instructor rating

Question on CRM

Question on SMS

Viscous hydroplaning low speed and thin film of water

Increase speed with constant rate of descent: lower angle of attack and increase power

Same question but in slow flight (how is that different??)

Intensity learning factor when student realizes late that he forgot to switch fuel tanks

Increase glide speed in a headwind because GS faster

Landing with student, encounters gust and plane noses up above runway, course of action:
Lower nose, increase power and raise flaps up

Constant radius turn going from upwind to downwind: decrease angle of bank

Illusion when turning from downwind to upwind: skid and decreased speed

Decceleration causes false descent illusion

Moving head too fast in IMC: Coriolis illusion

No review after 28 days, students remember 40% of material

Characteristics of effective fault analysis

Personnel required at a FTU

Duty of CFI (multiple answers)

Age for RPP, PPL and CPL 16,17,18

Why students for night rating need to practice no landing light taxi, I put because they’d know how to do it if it fails, other answers were because it could overheat and fail

2-3 questions on how to deal with specific students, one was a fast starter with above average skills, I put give more work and be critical of every small thing, other answer could be give more work if satisfied student had sufficient level of proficiency

If using a visual aid, don’t leave it on display when not using it (unfocused students)
