How is 8 minor injuries classified as an accident? The severe turbulence makes it one? Having to declare an emergency to land in India is not that unusual.

Given where it happened I believe an ICAO definition would apply, which defines the threshold for an accident as resulting in a severe injury or structural damage, neither applies. I think it's just a title error.

I flew to multiple destinations in India for 8 years. Was flying to India multiple times each week all year round.

I’ve never had to declare an emergency to land there.

As a weekly flyer into Indian cities, I need to question that comment.

These guys didn’t want to land in Delhi, their alternate was probably AMD, and they’ve seen the NOTAM, which says the runway is closed due to maintenance, however for emergencies can be open with a 30 min notice.

Tight on fuel I’m sure, so they declared the emergency to get that runway open by the time they got there.

p.s. on a normal flight, you can’t imagine the amount of papaerwork you do once there. Can’t even imagine the nightmare of paperwork that would be awaiting you if you declare an emergency.

Few years back AC had an incident going into Mumbai, couldn’t land due to weather, gone to alternate tight on gas and we’re put into a hold. Had to declare an emergency to get priority to land. Not a lot of room for gas on these 15-16 hr flights.

Knowing the alternate airport has a closed runway with a 30 min call out, I would have done the same.
