IFR calls on 126.7

Post by 56BY111 »

Why are there calls like this on 126.7?

". . . we are a king air level at FL200. . ."

My question is this: You're IFR, you're being separated by ATC from other IFR aircraft, there are no VFR aircraft above 12, 500 feet (in most of Canada) which are not controlled . . .who exactly are you worried about hitting up there? Or are you just that bored?

ifr calls 126.7

Post by oldncold »

here is the scoop.

in northern canada uncontrolled airspace is huge chunk of real estate.
below fl 180 radar service is terminated unless in a control area extension at 12,500 and so you may have a ifr
at 17000 going somewhere and not know because they are not being ACTIVELY monitored.

calling on 126.7 gives other ifr's in uncontrolled airspace a heads up.

if there is no manditory rco or pal then 126.7 call is required to be given
15min prior to expected landing and five min before beginning the approach. this is often stated on the cap approach plates.

Also, at 2000 to 3000 feet per minute descent, you'll be below FL 180 in no time. A good place to make that call methinks.

We frequently fly between YEV-YZF or YEV-YXD and there are areas we cannot reach center untill in range, and this is in the mid 20's. So if you cannot reach center (and not on radar), wouldn't it be prudent to let people know your there?

Also in the Northen Control Area it's uncontrolled untill FL230.

And as planett pointed out, you can drop like a rock if you want to, and we frequently do.

Cheers.

I tend to call before entering uncontrolled (FL180 in my area usually) so I may make calls out of FL 200 at times.

Also when an aircraft is up nice and high you will hear that call on '26.7 very very far away.

Another example would be 50 miles out of YZF everything below 23000' is uncontrolled. Everyone and their brother is flying out there Uncontrolled IFR and perhaps VFR in IMC but that never happens!!
Best to give the heads up!
