Brake Failure Results in Runway Excursion

Post by pelmet »

It would be nice to have more detail on this one. It sounds like the pilot may have intentionally used the grass to slow down or perhaps it wasn't the case. If so, I suppose it is a calculated risk based on various factors. Something that can be kept in mind as a possible option depending on the circumstances, especially if the whole brake system has failed and going around is not an option.

It would be interesting to hear any brake failure on landing stories from anyone who has experienced it.

C-FPEL, a Cessna 172S aircraft operated by Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre was conducting a
local examination flight from Region of Waterloo International Airport (CYKF), ON with 1 pilot
examiner and 1 student pilot onboard. While landing on runway 12, the aircraft experienced a
brake failure on the left side. The aircraft subsequently exited the runway into the grass in order to
slow down. The company maintenance inspected the aircraft and found that the brake master
cylinder failed for the left side. A slight bend was also found on the elevator although it could not be
determined if it was the result of the excursion.
